The White House chief declared that illegal drugs are still pouring into the United States from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels, despite both countries' pledges to increase border control efforts.

"We cannot allow this scourge to continue to plague the United States and therefore, until it is stopped or severely controlled, the proposed tariffs scheduled to take effect on March 4 will indeed go on schedule," President Trump said, adding that an additional 10% tariff on China would also be imposed on the same day.

The latest announcement came just one day after President Trump left open the possibility of further delaying the imposition of a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada until April 2, about a month later than the deadline he announced in early February.

The 47th President of the United States made tariffs a core part of his second-term agenda and used them as a threat to other countries.

In addition to tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada, President Trump has ordered a global 25% tariff on imported steel and aluminum, effective March 12.
