The MacBook Air M1 was launched in the Vietnamese market in the winter of 2020. After more than 4 years, this device is still sold by some Apple Authorized Resellers (AAR) in Vietnam, but there is only one configuration option: 8 GB RAM, 256 GB internal memory, and no other color options other than silver. The common selling price of this product in 2024 fluctuates around 17 million VND.
Recently, the MacBook Air, Apple's best-selling model on the shelves for a long time, has been slightly adjusted down to more than 16 million VND. At one point, users could even own this model for about 15.9 million VND - the lowest price ever recorded. According to some AARs, the MacBook Air M1 does not have much stock left and will also stop selling when the remaining units are sold out, expected around the upcoming Lunar New Year.
MacBook Air M1 is "clearing stock" and will soon stop selling in Vietnam
Apple has long since stopped producing this model, removing it from the Mac computer catalog on its website, but still supplying a certain quantity to some markets, including Vietnam. The machines still sold in Vietnam today are also imported from previous batches. Recently, dealers have stopped importing this product due to market changes, as well as the impact of the launch of the next generations with M2 and M3 chips with stronger performance, upgraded in both design and configuration.
Is MacBook Air M1 still worth buying at this time?
At the beginning of 2024, the MacBook Air M1 may still be a great device for those who need to use basic office tasks, surf the web or watch movies for entertainment; or suitable for students who study simply at home/remotely, students in fields that do not require technical factors, programming... But by the end of the year, users may have to reconsider their needs for this expense.
Currently, on the online Apple Store in Vietnam, the standard MacBook Air M2 model has upgraded RAM to 16 GB, the internal memory remains 256 GB but has a price from 22.5 million for accounts in theEducation group (people working in this field, students). Upgrading the standard configuration from 8 GB RAM to 16 GB is a new move by Apple at the end of the year, showing the necessity of using the current minimum RAM is no longer 8 GB.
Meanwhile, with the MacBook Air M1, users only have the option of 8 GB RAM. Although it is 6 - 7 million VND cheaper than its "younger brother" M2, the configuration of the Air M1 has become outdated and will have difficulty meeting hardware requirements. 8 GB RAM will make it difficult for the device to meet multitasking needs, especially when opening many browser tabs.
MacBook Air M1 is approaching the end of its life cycle
In addition, many tech-savvy users recommend that 4-year-old computers with minimal RAM (not upgradeable) should not be updated to the latest macOS versions to ensure stability and smoothness. The reason is that new macOS operating systems often appear with higher-end hardware devices, requiring more system resources to operate smoothly.
Not being able to, or not being able to, upgrade the macOS version will cause two disadvantages for users. The first is the security issue. New operating systems, or bug fixes, are often more secure, handling vulnerabilities that existed in previously released versions, minimizing the risk of hackers taking advantage to attack users' computers, stealing personal information, important and sensitive data. Manufacturers themselves always recommend that their customers regularly update their device's operating system to the latest version.
Second, many commonly used applications are also constantly updated, and some of them may only work on higher versions of macOS. Not upgrading macOS for MacBook Air M1 will make it impossible for users to upgrade to new versions of applications, or even be forced to stop using them if they have not updated, causing many inconveniences.
Another factor that cannot be ignored is that Mac computers usually have a "life cycle" (the time of hardware, software, and security support) of 5 years. Currently, the MacBook Air M1 has ended 4 years since its launch and is entering its "5th year", which means that this device is at the end of its life cycle and will soon stop supporting. For the above reasons, users should consider choosing this device at the end of 2024, even though the product is currently cheap.
