"I don't know what else can be done to prove the legitimacy of these players," coach Peter Cklamovski said at a press conference on July 23 organized by FAM. The press conference took place after the national team was accused of falsifying the naturalization documents of five players of South American origin.
The incident began after Malaysia’s 4-0 win over Vietnam in the final qualifying round for the 2027 Asian Cup in June. Five naturalized players, Jon Irazabal, Joao Figueiredo, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca and Facundo Garces, contributed greatly to the victory, but at the same time, doubts were raised about the origin and legality of their naturalization documents.
"I'm tired of this. It's been weeks since the match with Vietnam, but the discussions haven't stopped yet," coach Cklamovski expressed his frustration and said he wanted the team to focus on the goal ahead.
The Australian captain also shared the sacrifices of the naturalized players: "Machuca missed the moment his son was born to play, Holgado flew from South America just to return to the club after the match... I don't know what else they have to sacrifice to prove their desire to contribute to the Malaysian team."
Coach Cklamovski concluded: "Indonesia naturalized players before us, and I know Vietnam also changed the law. These players are playing for Malaysia, regardless of where they come from. They deserve the support of the fans."
After withdrawing from the Central Asian Championship due to a lack of strong players, the Malaysian team will play friendly matches against Singapore (September 4) and Palestine (September 8) in Kuala Lumpur. This is a preparation step for the match against Laos in the Asian Cup qualifiers and to defend the top position of Group F of this team.
