An emotional derby match.

The match between two teams from the same Ho Chi Minh City region, Van Hien University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), was crucial in determining who would advance to the quarterfinals of the TNSV THACO Cup 2025. Despite being considered the underdog, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology transformed their performance thanks to the return of their captain and midfielder, Hoang Quoc Phong. Coach Nguyen Van Tuan's players entered the game with high determination and a relaxed mindset, creating a back-and-forth battle with their opponents. Meanwhile, some players on the Van Hien University team were nervous and did not perform as expected by the coaching staff.

The team from the University of Technology (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City - center ) put in a great effort but were still eliminated in the group stage.

The situation in Group B, along with the other groups, meant that a draw would see both teams eliminated, so they proactively attacked in the latter half of the second half. Both Van Hien University and Bach Khoa University created numerous scoring opportunities but failed to capitalize. In the 78th minute, Vo Tran Hoang Phuc ignited the Ton Duc Thang University stadium with a precise and powerful header that beat goalkeeper Tran Quoc Dat, giving Van Hien University a 1-0 lead. This golden goal decided the match, securing Van Hien University's place in the quarterfinals with 4 points (one of the two best third-placed teams).

Despite losing all three matches, the players from the Polytechnic University team showed great fighting spirit. Coach Tuan "the Black's" players fought hard for their team but were unlucky, and there is still much work to be done to return stronger in the new season. Meanwhile, Coach Hoang Hai Duong of the Van Hien University team expressed his gratitude to the numerous fans who came to the stadium to boost the team's morale. "This year, the Van Hien University team has more than 10 first-year students. They are still unfamiliar with the big stage of the THACO Student Tournament Finals. The encouragement and support of the fans are the motivation for them to try their best. Having overcome the challenging group stage, we aim to defeat our opponents in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals," Coach Hoang Hai Duong shared.

In the other match of Group B, Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism staged an incredible comeback to earn a point against Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports. Trailing 3-0, Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism managed to equalize 3-3. This result allowed Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports to successfully defend their top spot in the group, while Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism finished second.

Seven out of eight teams have qualified for the quarterfinals.

As of yesterday's matches, 7 out of 8 teams have secured a place in the quarterfinals: Quy Nhon University (7 points, first in Group A), Ton Duc Thang University (5 points, second in Group A), Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports (7 points, first in Group B), Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism (5 points, second in Group B), Van Hien University (4 points, third in Group B), Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports (4 points, Group C), and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (4 points, Group C). The remaining spot will be determined today, March 9th, after the final matches of Group C between Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports and Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry (3:30 PM), and Dong Nai University of Technology and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (5:45 PM).

If the Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry team draws or wins against the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports team, they will advance to the next round. If they lose, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry team will finish third in Group C, and they will have the same 3 points as the Hue University team (third in Group A), so the tiebreaker will be based on goal difference to determine which team advances to the quarterfinals.

Currently, Hue University has a goal difference of -5, while Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry has a goal difference of 0, giving the advantage to the team from Ho Chi Minh City. Hue University only has 3 points because the VFF (Vietnam Football Federation) ruled them 0-3 defeated in matches against Quy Nhon University and Ton Duc Thang University due to violations of tournament regulations.
