The two accomplices include: Tran Viet Loi (born in 1998, residing in Phong An commune, Phong Dien district) and Le Thi My Lan (born in 2001, residing in Tu Ha ward, Huong Tra town), who is Quy's wife.
According to the indictment, in early 2022, while using Facebook, Quy saw that many people wanted to know the lottery results before the draw, so he came up with the idea of providing false information that he knew the lottery results in advance to sell this information for money.
Around February 2022, Quy posted an advertisement on Facebook with the content: "You can know the lottery results of the Lottery Company in advance", along with his phone number and Zalo account for those who need to buy to contact.
When Ms. Nguyen Thi H. Y (born in 1982, residing in Lien Bao commune, Tien Du district, Bac Ninh province) contacted Quy to buy numbers, Quy used many phone numbers, impersonating many people related to the lottery drawing such as: the person who drew the numbers, people working at the lottery company, the child of the General Director of the lottery company to make Ms. Y trust and transfer money.
During the money transfers, Quy provided Ms. Y with numbers that he thought up himself and sometimes matched the lottery results, so Ms. Y believed it was real and continued to transfer money to Quy.
During the period from February 22 to March 24, 2022, in Huong Tra town, Quy used the above tricks to appropriate 14 times from Ms. Y with a total amount of more than 2,524 billion VND.
Of which, Loi helped Quy 3 times to appropriate 290 million VND and was given 29 million VND. Le Thi My Lan (Quy's wife) clearly knew that Quy had defrauded others of more than 1.5 billion VND, but did not report it to the competent State agency.
Quy and his family have returned all the money they stole to the victim. Ms. Y and her husband did not ask for anything more and asked for a reduction in Quy's criminal liability.
After deliberation, the Provincial People's Court sentenced defendant Tran Van Quy to 7 years in prison, Tran Viet Loi to 2 years and 6 months in prison, both for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property". Defendant Le Thi My Lan was sentenced to 9 months in prison for the crime of "Failure to report a crime", suspended.
