Real Madrid do not allow fans to print Franco Mastantuono's name on their shirts. |
According to Spanish media, Real Madrid does not allow fans to print shirts with the word "Franco" because it is the same name as the country's historical dictator Francisco Franco. When fans tried to print on the club's website, they received a message: "The personalization policy does not allow the use of this name."
The decision of "Los Blancos" has surprised and criticized many fans, especially when the name filtering system is considered inconsistent. Notably, the names of some players from the opponent are blocked such as Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona) or Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), while Raphinha is still allowed.
Mastantuono made his Real Madrid debut in a 1-0 win over Osasuna in the opening round of La Liga 2025/26 on August 20. He impressed and became the third youngest foreign player in the club's history to officially play. During his 30 minutes on the pitch, the Bernabeu crowd chanted: "Franco, Franco, Franco".
In the summer of 2025, Real spent 46 million euros to recruit Mastantuono from River Plate. This is the most expensive player sale in Argentina's history. At the Bernabeu, Mastantuono wears the number 30 shirt and receives a salary of about 3.5 million euros per year.
Mastantuono's strengths lie in his tactical vision and ability to pass the ball to create opportunities. For River Plate, he made 61 appearances, scoring 10 goals, an impressive number for an 18-year-old midfielder.
