At the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Trung Chon, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development Studies, Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Resources and Environment, stated that land subsidence in Ho Chi Minh City is an existing objective reality that the city needs to face and have long-term solutions.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Le Trung Chon, although it happens slowly, the consequences of land subsidence combined with climate change, extreme weather, and increased high tides will cause very serious consequences, causing great damage to technical infrastructure, civil works, and socio -economic development.
Therefore, regular monitoring, simulation, and forecasting of ground subsidence to provide adaptive solutions is extremely necessary.
To effectively respond to subsidence, Ho Chi Minh City needs to build a system to regularly monitor and forecast ground subsidence, applying modern technology to support the government in making decisions appropriate to natural conditions and sustainable development.

According to the research team on land subsidence in Ho Chi Minh City in the period 2006-2020 using InSAR analysis technique, the current average subsidence rate across the city is about 2-5cm per year.
In areas with weak geological foundations, concentrated in commercial buildings, the subsidence rate can reach 7 to 8cm per year.
"Therefore, we propose that Ho Chi Minh City needs to build an information system to simulate and forecast land subsidence to support decision-making to help the government have quick, appropriate and accurate solutions, improve management capacity, contribute to effective urban management, adapt to climate change and sustainable development," Associate Professor, Dr. Le Trung Chon added.
