China is the largest market for Tesla's Model Y electric sports utility vehicle, making it the world's best-selling car in the first quarter of 2023, according to data from market research firm JATO.

According to statistics, Tesla sold 267,171 Model Ys in the first quarter of 2023, of which 94,469 were sold in China, higher than 83,664 in the US and 71,114 in Europe. However, overall, the US is still Tesla's largest market.

Statistics show that the Model Y is the top seller globally, followed by Toyota's Corolla, Hilux, Rav4 and Camry. The Model Y is the only all-electric vehicle on the list.

JATO senior analyst Felipe Munoz expects the Model Y to become the world's best-selling car by the end of 2023 thanks to price cuts under the electric vehicle incentive program.

Increased output from Tesla's new factories in Texas and Berlin as supply chain issues ease, coupled with growing demand for electric vehicles in developed economies , will boost Model Y sales, Mr. Munoz said.

Unlike many automakers, Tesla has a limited number of models and trim levels, which has helped make the Model Y its best-selling vehicle.

However, Barclays analyst Dan Levy noted there are concerns about Tesla's overreliance on just two models, the Model Y and Model 3, and said Tesla may need more models and versions to expand its market.

Tesla has aggressively cut prices this year, according to Ford CEO Jim Farley, in the face of fierce competition in the SUV segment, as Tesla's long-standing Model Y faces a host of new rivals.

Billionaire Elon Musk visited China for the first time in three years on May 30, a move that underscores the importance of the world's largest electricity market.
