Russian border guards of the Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on April 5 that a Ukrainian light aircraft had crashed in the Bryansk region of Russia, near the Ukrainian border.

The pilot of the aircraft survived the crash and was captured by Russian authorities. Russian border guards did not specify whether it was a military or civilian aircraft.

Images shared online show the pilot apparently wearing military-style clothing and a camouflage hat. The pilot was carrying a bulletproof vest and an AK assault rifle while attempting to escape.

Russian security agencies said the plane crashed for "unknown reasons" near the village of Butovsk, 25km from the border. The pilot attempted to escape back to Ukraine but was intercepted by a border patrol.

The aircraft is believed to be similar to the Aeroprakt A-22 Foxbat ultralight aircraft manufactured in Ukraine. The plane landed in an open field.

Earlier that day, the Bryansk region was attacked by a Ukrainian drone, according to Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz. The drone dropped an explosive device on the Suzemsky district of the border region with Ukraine, injuring at least one person.

The incident occurred amid Moscow's accusations that Ukraine was behind a series of attacks on Russian territory in recent weeks. These included drone strikes targeting civilian infrastructure in southern Russia and a drone crash on the outskirts of Moscow, just about 120km from the Kremlin.

In early March, the Russian military and security agencies accused a "Ukrainian sabotage group" of infiltrating the Bryansk border region and attacking several villages. According to the Russian FSB, the sabotage group was "repelled back into Ukrainian territory and met with a large-scale artillery response." The FSB stated that a large quantity of various explosive devices was found in the area targeted by the Ukrainian group.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a "terrorist attack," implying that those behind the raid may also have orchestrated the assassination of Russian journalist Darya Dugina last August.

Russian border regions have been repeatedly attacked in recent months amid a fierce conflict between the two countries that has lasted for more than a year. Moscow accuses Kyiv of being behind these attacks. However, Ukraine denies any involvement in the attack on the Bryansk region. Mykhailo Podoliak, an advisor to the Chief of Staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, called Russia's accusation a "provocation."

In January, Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's military intelligence, warned that more attacks deep inside Russian territory were possible in the near future. However, Budanov did not specify whether Ukraine played any role in these incidents.
