Microsoft has just announced plans to spend about $80 billion in fiscal year 2025 to build data centers to train AI models, deploy AI applications and cloud computing.
Microsoft President Brad Smith revealed that more than half of the company's AI infrastructure spending is expected to take place in the United States. Microsoft's fiscal year 2025 ends in June.
Microsoft announced plans to invest $80 billion to build AI-powered data centers.
“Today, the United States leads the global AI race thanks to private capital investment and innovation from American companies of all sizes, from dynamic startups to established enterprises. At Microsoft, we see this firsthand through our partnerships with OpenAI, from growing companies like Anthropic and xAI, and our own AI-powered software platforms and applications,” said Smith.
Several leading tech companies are rushing to spend billions of dollars on Nvidia graphics processing units to train and run AI models. The rapid spread of OpenAI’s ChatGPT assistant app, which launched in late 2022, has kicked off an AI race for companies to offer their own generative AI capabilities.
After investing more than $13 billion in OpenAI, Microsoft provides cloud infrastructure for the startup and has integrated its enterprise models into Windows, Teams, and other products.
Microsoft reported $20 billion in capital expenditures and assets purchased under financial leases worldwide , with $14.9 billion spent on property and equipment, in the first quarter of fiscal 2025. Capital expenditures will increase sequentially in the next fiscal quarter, Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said.

Microsoft President Brad Smith wants the US to continue to maintain its world dominance in the field of AI.
Analysts surveyed by Visible Alpha are expecting about $63.2 billion in property and equipment additions in fiscal 2025, implying 42% year-over-year growth.
Microsoft's revenue from Azure and other cloud services grew 33% in its fiscal first quarter, with 12 percentage points coming from AI services.
Mr. Smith called on the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump to protect the country's leadership in AI througheducation and promoting US AI technologies abroad.
“China is starting to provide developing countries with subsidized access to scarce chips and is promising to build local AI data centers. The Chinese are smart enough to realize that if a country standardizes on a Chinese AI platform, it is likely that the country will continue to rely on that platform in the future,” said a top Microsoft executive.
The best response for the United States, according to Mr. Smith, is not to complain about competitors but to ensure that it wins the race ahead. This requires technology companies to act quickly and effectively to promote American AI as a superior alternative.
