The Northern Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Station forecasts that, due to the influence of upper-level wind convergence, Hanoi will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening of May 17th, with rainfall generally ranging from 10-30mm. During thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind may occur.
In other areas of the North, from the night of May 17th to May 19th, the Northwest region will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing heavy rain; the Northeast region will have moderate rain and scattered thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rain.
From May 19th to 21st, the northern region will continue to experience rain, moderate rain, and thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rain. From May 23rd onwards, the northern region is likely to experience widespread heatwaves.
The meteorological agency warns that thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind could affect agricultural production, cause trees to fall, damage houses, transportation infrastructure, and other facilities. Localized heavy rainfall poses a risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes, and flooding in low-lying areas.
In fact, the heavy rains in recent days have caused damage in Cao Bang province. As of 6:30 AM on May 17th, heavy rains had flooded 114 houses in Ly Quoc commune to a depth of less than 1 meter; many agricultural areas along streams and low-lying areas in Ly Quoc and Dam Thuy communes were flooded and buried. Several roads were flooded and affected by landslides; including National Highway 4A flooded in the area of Ban Thang bridge and Nguom Bang cave; Provincial Road 206 experienced landslides on the embankment at many points; and the rural road in Ban Thang hamlet, near Na Mu bridge, was flooded to a depth of more than 3 meters.
The heavy rain also damaged one irrigation project, flooded one school with water levels below 1 meter, submerged one passenger bus in the Ngườm Bang cave area on National Highway 4A, and damaged the roof of a livestock shed in Sơn Hà hamlet, Thông Nông commune. Local authorities mobilized forces to assist residents in relocating people, property, and livestock to safe areas.
