Chrysler Pacifica Minivan Mysteriously Appears on Vietnamese Streets

Recently, a Chrysler Pacifica minivan suddenly appeared in the Long Bien area, Hanoi, making car enthusiasts curious.

The brand new Chrysler Pacifica was transported by a specialized vehicle, the logo was completely covered, but the overall design typical of the Pacifica line made it easy for viewers to recognize this as a famous car model from the US. Notably, this is the first time the Chrysler Pacifica has appeared in Vietnam, although the Chrysler brand is not officially distributed in the country.

This is not the latest version, which almost eliminates the possibility of commercial distribution in Vietnam. On the roof of the car appears a LiDAR system - a sensor technology commonly found on self-driving cars. This shows that the Pacifica is most likely not imported to serve consumer needs but for research and technology development.

In the US, the Chrysler Pacifica is a popular choice for companies developing self-driving cars, typically Waymo - a subsidiary of Alphabet (Google). The appearance of this minivan with a similar LiDAR sensor in Hanoi further strengthens the hypothesis that this is a vehicle for research or testing of advanced driver assistance technology (ADAS).

The Chrysler Pacifica is in the premium minivan segment, competing directly with models such as the Kia Carnival, Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna. In terms of size, the Pacifica is slightly longer and wider than the Kia Carnival, with a nearly equivalent wheelbase, providing a spacious interior.

The Pacifica appearing in Vietnam is a plug-in hybrid version (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle - PHEV), equipped with a 3.6L V6 engine combined with an electric motor, producing a total capacity of about 260 horsepower. The impressive fuel consumption is only about 2.8 liters/100 km and can travel up to 51 km on pure electricity.

Inside, the Pacifica offers 7- or 8-seat configuration options. The second and third rows of seats can be folded flat into the floor, optimizing storage space. The car is equipped with many high-end amenities such as heated and massage seats, an entertainment system with 2 headrest screens for the rear seats, and 3-zone automatic air conditioning.

In terms of technology, Pacifica owns an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), including a 360-degree camera, parking sensors and automatic parking assist, contributing to improving the experience and safety of use.

Although it is unclear who owns or the exact purpose of the Chrysler Pacifica that appeared in Hanoi, this event shows that self-driving car technology is being quietly tested in Vietnam.
