"One act of giving – many lives saved."
Following an unfortunate accident, despite receiving intensive medical care, Mr. BXT (39 years old, from Phu Tho province ) passed away. Overcoming their grief, Mr. T.'s family made a humane decision: to donate his organs to save others. This decision has ignited hope for many other lives.
The patient who was fortunate enough to receive a kidney transplant is Mr. BH D. (born in 1981 in Hai Phong ).
Mr. D. was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in October 2024 and received conservative treatment for nearly 10 months. By 2025, his kidney function had deteriorated, requiring him to undergo dialysis three times a week to survive.
On the night of May 15, 2026, kidneys from a brain-dead donor at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital were urgently transferred to Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital (Hai Phong), with carefully calculated timelines to minimize the cold ischemia time and ensure the quality of the transplanted organ.
At 10:20 PM the same day, the kidney was transported to Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital. Immediately after receiving it, the entire kidney transplant team at the hospital was ready to perform the surgery that night, with professional support from experts at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.
Outside, Ms. Pham Thi Nhung, Mr. D.'s wife, and their relatives were quite worried. Looking towards the operating room, Ms. Nhung shared: "When we heard the news that someone had donated a kidney, the family was very happy, but we couldn't help but feel anxious as he was undergoing this important surgery. The family places complete trust in the medical team."
After many hours of tense surgery, the transplant was completed at 2:00 AM on May 16th. Following the transplant, the transplanted kidney received good blood supply, urination occurred immediately on the operating table, and the patient's hemodynamic parameters remained stable. After 12 days of dedicated effort by the medical team at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital and the patient, on the morning of May 28th, Mr. D.'s health stabilized, and he was discharged from the hospital, much to the joy and emotion of his family.
A few days earlier, Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital also successfully performed kidney transplants on a father and son. For Mr. HVM (40 years old), the concept of time over the past years has not been measured in days and months, but in frequent dialysis cycles.
Complications from type 2 diabetes led him to the final stage of chronic kidney failure, his body was wasting away day by day. Throughout that long journey, Mr. HVK (68 years old) - his father - silently accompanied him, witnessing his son's labored breathing and agonizing pains.
Facing the brink of life and death, overcoming the age barrier, the father decided to donate a kidney to save his son, a choice not only driven by reason but also by the sacred love of a father, opening up a new chance at life for his child.
Thanks to the dedication and efforts of the medical team, the transplant was successfully performed, rekindling hope for the patient's recovery.
Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital elevates the quality of healthcare.

Of the 10 kidney transplants performed, the two aforementioned cases have set records and outstanding successes for Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital in implementing organ transplantation techniques in general, and kidney transplantation in particular.
Among the transplant cases, there was one instance where the living kidney donor was the oldest person in Vietnam to date.
Notably, this also marks the first time Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital has successfully performed a kidney transplant from a brain-dead donor to a patient with end-stage chronic kidney disease in Hai Phong.
This success is primarily due to the professional support provided by central-level hospitals to lower-level hospitals.
Prior to the aforementioned kidney transplants from brain-dead donors, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital and Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital jointly organized a workshop to share expertise and experience on mobilizing organ and tissue donation from brain-dead donors; kidney coordination; and inter-hospital and inter-specialty collaboration in the kidney transplant process.
This is one of the important preparatory steps to finalize the process of counseling, care, resuscitation, and routine implementation of organ transplantation techniques from brain-dead donors in the near future at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital.
According to Dr. Do Manh Thang, Director of Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, the success of the kidney transplant from a brain-dead donor further affirms the effectiveness of the close professional cooperation between Viet Duc Friendship Hospital and Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, especially the support, companionship, sharing, and technology transfer from the leadership and experts of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital throughout the process of implementing kidney transplantation techniques in Hai Phong.
This transplant also continues to spread the profound humanitarian significance of organ and tissue donation after brain death – a noble act that has given many patients a chance at life.
In the coming period, Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital will continue to promote the donation of organs and body parts from brain-dead patients to increase the supply of donated organs. This is an opportunity for the hospital to implement kidney transplantation techniques to help prolong the lives of many patients with chronic kidney failure who need a kidney transplant.
The successful implementation of kidney transplantation has given many patients with end-stage renal failure the opportunity to live normal lives. Significantly, the routine implementation of this technique at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital has created opportunities for patients with chronic kidney disease to more easily access advanced medical techniques right in their locality. This is gradually transforming Hai Phong into a medical center of the Northern Coastal region, in line with Resolution 45 of the Politburo on the construction and development of Hai Phong city until 2030, with a vision to 2045.
According to statistics from Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, the number of chronic kidney disease patients in Hai Phong is currently quite high. Every year, approximately 300 out of 200,000 chronic kidney disease patients require continuous dialysis. However, regular dialysis significantly impacts the health of patients and the finances of their families.
