Successful laparoscopic appendectomy for 2 emergency cases at Con Dao special zone

On September 21, the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center announced that the unit had just successfully performed two consecutive laparoscopic emergency appendectomy surgeries, marking an important step forward in improving the emergency surgical capacity here.

The team of doctors performed laparoscopic surgery on an appendicitis case in Con Dao special zone.

The first case was a 15-year-old male patient with right iliac fossa abdominal pain, diagnosed by doctors with localized peritonitis due to appendicitis.

The medical team decided to perform an emergency laparoscopic surgery. The surgery revealed a necrotic appendix with localized pus, the results consistent with the diagnosis.

The second case was a 54-year-old female patient with a history of hypertension and cesarean section (old surgical scar in the lower abdomen).

The patient was admitted to the hospital because of pain around the navel, localized in the right iliac fossa, lasting 8 hours before. Ultrasound showed appendicitis of 10mm, monitored for rupture. Diagnosis: Peritonitis due to appendicitis.

Surgeons in the rotating working group in Con Dao consulted remotely with Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Vinh Hung, Director of Binh Dan Hospital, then agreed to prescribe surgery.

The laparoscopic surgery went smoothly, removing adhesions from the old surgical wound and removing the appendix. The patient's health is now stable.

Doctors and nurses from hospitals are being sent to Con Dao special zone.

The successful implementation of laparoscopic surgery for appendicitis cases marks a new step forward in health care for people in Con Dao special zone.

Previously, cases of acute appendicitis here often had to be urgently transferred to the mainland, with the potential risk of serious complications and prolonged treatment time.

Endoscopic surgery right on the island helps shorten the "golden time" to save patients, and at the same time demonstrates the efforts of the health sector in taking care of people's health in remote areas.

Two successful surgeries are clear evidence of the effectiveness of the coordination model between the Military-Civilian Medical Center and the professional support coordination from upper-level hospitals.
