| Along with expanding the cultivated area, Thai Nguyen is experimenting with high-quality rice varieties, selecting those suitable for large-scale cultivation that match the local soil conditions. |
Currently, the province has approximately 86,000 hectares of rice, with an average yield of over 54 quintals/hectare, including more than 36,000 hectares in the spring crop and nearly 50,000 hectares in the autumn crop. In recent years, along with the goal of increasing the economic value per unit area, the provincial authorities and relevant departments have issued many mechanisms and policies to support and guide people in expanding the production of high-quality rice varieties and specialty rice, gradually replacing low-yield pure rice varieties.
High-quality rice varieties are increasingly asserting their dominance thanks to their good rice quality, fragrant and sticky cooked rice, meeting market demands. Many varieties also have good resistance to pests and diseases, stable yields, and meet safe production standards.
According to the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, in recent years, farmers in the province have gradually shifted from focusing on quantity to improving quality, linked with the application of VietGAP, organic farming processes, and product consumption linkages. To date, the area of high-quality rice, specialty rice, and rice produced according to safety standards is estimated at over 42,000 hectares.

| The J01 rice variety is being tested in Thai Nguyen province, with encouragement to expand its cultivation area, contributing to the development of high-quality rice production in the region. |
Along with crop variety transformation, the province is promoting the application of advanced techniques in cultivation, forming concentrated, specialized production areas linked to brand building. Several specialty products have been established, such as Thau Dau sticky rice in Phu Binh, On Luong sticky rice in Hop Thanh, Bao Thai rice in Dinh Hoa and Cho Don... Organizing production by region not only creates conditions for improving productivity and quality but also facilitates consumption linkages.
Among high-quality rice varieties, J02 is a prime example of production efficiency. This rice variety originates from Japan and was imported and selected by the Institute of Agricultural Genetics. Introduced into production in Thai Nguyen in 2015, the area planted with J02 now accounts for over 40% of the total area of high-quality pure rice, equivalent to nearly 10,000 hectares.
Practical experience shows that this rice variety has a fairly high yield, good rice quality, fragrant and sticky cooked rice that doesn't harden when cooled, and a common selling price of 22-25 thousand VND/kg, much higher than many traditional varieties, contributing to increased income for rice farmers. The conversion from old varieties to J02 and other high-quality varieties is becoming a clear trend in many localities.
Despite positive results, expanding the area of high-quality rice cultivation still places higher demands on production and consumption organization. In the coming period, all levels and sectors need to continue strengthening propaganda and guidance for farmers to change production practices, encouraging businesses to participate in linking safe and organic rice production with product buyback agreements. At the same time, focus on trade promotion and support for the consumption of rice and rice products, especially for branded specialty rice varieties.
Furthermore, the widespread adoption of safe production processes, mechanization, water-saving irrigation techniques, and high technology should be promoted to improve productivity, quality, and environmental protection. Planning concentrated production areas and developing large-scale rice fields linked to value chains will be crucial solutions for stabilizing output, increasing value, and ensuring the sustainable development of Thai Nguyen's rice production industry.
