On the afternoon of October 31, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong shared some thoughts on the draft regulations on junior high school and high school admissions for the 2025-2026 school year that are being consulted.
Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong said that the 10th grade exam in 2025 will include 3 subjects: Math, Literature and a 3rd subject chosen by the department from among the subjects. The rest will be evaluated by scores, but according to the principle of changing every year to avoid rote learning and biased learning.
Mr. Thuong said: "Having 3 subjects fixed every year can lead to consequences. There will be some schools that from the beginning of the school year will have students focus on 3 fixed subjects. Meanwhile, the remaining subjects are also important in providing knowledge and skills for students, ensuring the requirements of the program are met."
According to Mr. Thuong, to develop enough qualities and abilities, it is not just 3 subjects but all subjects.
"There is no solution that can fully satisfy the needs, so we choose the optimal solution. The solution that we consider most suitable and appropriate to ensure the factors of quality and capacity education is according to the 2018 general education program," Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong shared.
Mr. Thuong said that parents do not need to worry about the 10th grade exam. Students can study normally and pass the exam. Education must ensure that the program output has enough quality and capacity in all subjects, not just Literature - Math - English.
Regarding Ho Chi Minh City’s proposal to maintain the stability of the 10th grade entrance exam, Deputy Minister Thuong said that the 10th grade entrance exam is carried out according to regulations and is common across the country. According to him, students have been studying English from primary school to grade 12, and if they want, they can even study it for life.
