One way to potentially fix a Wi-Fi router that's working intermittently.

Although still frequently mentioned on tech forums, the 30-30-30 reset rule may not be suitable for newer Wi-Fi routers.

When experiencing problems with the internet or electronic devices, turning them off for about 10 seconds and then back on is often the first step users take. But if the problem persists, users may need to perform a 30-30-30 reset to return the Wi-Fi router to its factory settings.

The 30-30-30 rule is no longer common on Wi-Fi routers today.

The 30-30-30 reset procedure is as follows: First, press and hold the small reset button inside the Wi-Fi router. This button is usually too small to press with your finger, so use a paperclip or toothpick instead. Hold this button for 30 seconds while the router is running. Then, without releasing the button, unplug the power cord and continue holding the button for another 30 seconds. Finally, plug the power cord back in and hold the button for another 30 seconds. The total time for this procedure is 90 seconds.

The 30-30-30 method is designed to remove all custom settings on the router, including Wi-Fi names and passwords, port forwarding rules, custom DNS entries, and administrator login credentials. After performing this, users will need to log back in using the default username and password printed on the sticker under the router.

The final solution involves a Wi-Fi router.

Although this method is no longer commonly recommended today, it is still known to many users through old forums. It originated from the Linksys WRT54G router, a prominent product in the 2000s, and contributed to the formation of the DD-WRT custom firmware community. However, with modern routers, holding the reset button for about 10 seconds is usually sufficient to perform the reset operation.

Users need to clearly distinguish between "resetting" and restarting a Wi-Fi router. Restarting a router simply involves turning the device off and on again, preserving current settings. This is the first step to try when the router is malfunctioning. Conversely, a complete 30-30-30 reset will erase all configurations and return the device to its original state. This is the last resort to take if you forget your administrator password or suspect network intrusion.

In summary, while the 30-30-30 reset method may be useful in some cases, users should think carefully before performing it as it may result in the loss of all custom settings on their Wi-Fi router.
