Among them are four players from the University of the Philippines: goalkeeper Alfonso Gonzalez, defenders Jian Caraig, Cian Galsim and Joshua Meriño.
The three players from Far Eastern University are Bryan Villanueva, Edgar Aban Jr., Theo Libarnes.
Ateneo de Manila University contributed two players, Jethro Flores and Dov Cariño.
There are also four players from universities outside the Philippines such as Nicholas Guimaraes (Juntendo University, Japan), Noah Leddel (Yale University, USA), Jax Peña (Western Reserve Academy) and Otu Banatao (Old Ominion University, USA).
Although the team has many student players who have never experienced professional football, coach Garrath McPherson is still very confident. He affirmed that the players from universities are not inferior in quality to the players in the youth teams of professional clubs.
"Our squad consists of 23 young players with many players who have played football in universities. But that does not mean they are not qualified to play for the U23 Philippines. Compared to young players in professional clubs, student players coming to football are really just different in their journey. I really look forward to the great things these players bring to the U23 Philippines" - Mr. McPherson said.
At the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, the Philippines U23 team fell into an extremely difficult group A with Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Each group in the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship will only have one top team officially advancing, so the competition is very fierce.
