A new rice variety has been licensed for distribution in the Mekong Delta.

Before being allowed to circulate in the Mekong Delta, under controlled trial conditions, the rice variety had the characteristics of strong stems that resist lodging, achieving 7-9 panicles per clump, soft rice texture, and a mild aroma.

On June 3rd, news from Can Tho University indicated that the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) had issued a decision recognizing the Nong Dan 2 rice variety for circulation in the Mekong Delta region, which the university had registered for.

This rice variety was studied by a team of authors including Huynh Quang Tin, Nguyen Hoang Khai, Nguyen Huu Loi, Nguyen Hong Cuc, Shivali Sharma, and Benjamin Kilian.

The Nong Dan 2 rice variety is being tested in Hoa An commune, Can Tho city.

According to Associate Professor Huynh Quang Tin, representing the research team, Nong Dan 2 is a pure rice variety researched and tested in the Mekong Delta, possessing outstanding characteristics in terms of growth, yield, quality, and adaptability to the region's farming conditions.

The new rice variety has strong seedlings, concentrated flowering time, high field uniformity, complete panicle emergence, and sturdy plants, which helps reduce lodging during cultivation. The growing season is 95-100 days in the winter-spring crop and 100-105 days in the summer-autumn crop.

The plant reaches a height of approximately 100-105 cm, with 7-9 effective panicles per clump, 90-100 grains per panicle, and a 1,000-grain weight of 25-26 grams. Trial results show that the variety yields 60.4-69.2 quintals/hectare in the winter-spring season. In terms of finished product, the Nong Dan 2 variety produces white, soft rice with a pleasant taste and a mild aroma.

With the decision to approve its circulation by the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the Nong Dan 2 rice variety is valid for circulation for 20 years and is permitted for use in the winter-spring and summer-autumn seasons in the provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta.

According to Can Tho University, the approval of the Nong Dan 2 rice variety for circulation is a significant achievement in the research and application of science and technology in agricultural production, helping to improve productivity and economic efficiency. This research is also significant in supplementing new seed sources for production, contributing to ensuring food security, adapting to climate change, and aiming towards sustainable agricultural development in the Mekong Delta region in particular.
