One day opens a new era.

In the endless flow of national history, there are moments of divergence, transitions from one era to another, each day ushering in a new era, each day potentially marking the beginning of a new era for our homeland.

For the city on the Han River, August 26, 1945 - when the red flag with a yellow star flew atop the Governor's Palace - was such a day, and 30 years later, March 29, 1975 - when the half-red, half-blue flag with a yellow star flew atop the City Hall - was also such a day.

A sediment of vision, way of thinking, and the fruits of labor.

A new era of development cannot be built overnight; it requires the accumulation of vision, ways of thinking, and the fruits of labor over many years—perhaps even continuously—by the indigenous population.

The new era of development for Da Nang after March 29, 1975, is no exception. To become the Da Nang we see today, a city worth visiting, living in, and investing in, this new era of development has had to continuously strive towards the future, year after year...

For example, in 1976, a textile factory was established in Thanh Khe ward, named after the liberation day of Da Nang - the predecessor of the 29/3 Textile and Garment Joint Stock Company. This company is preparing to celebrate its half-century anniversary (1976 - 2026).

For example, in 1982, the 29/3 Park, also located in Thanh Khe ward, was seen as a message of transformation when this "green lung" in the heart of the city was formed and officially put into operation in a place that before liberation was called Ham Bua - the central garbage dump of Da Nang during the war... This message of transformation will be even more impressive when, at the end of this year, the project to upgrade and renovate the 29/3 Park is completed with the architectural highlight being the "Ring of Peace "...

For example, in 1995, the March 29th Square in Hoa Cuong ward was inaugurated on the September 2nd road and its facade facing the April 30th road - a complex of spaces connecting three distinct periods in the history of the city as well as the history of the country.

For example, in 2000, the people of Da Nang enthusiastically inaugurated the Han River swing bridge – a bridge that not only launched the brand of "the city of bridges" but also contributed to changing the urban landscape of the area on the right bank of the Han River, forcing the people of Da Nang to reconsider their perception of "the girls of District 3"...

For example, in 2017, Da Nang was chosen as the venue for the 25th APEC High-Level Week, themed "Creating New Momentum, Building a Shared Future Together," featuring many important diplomatic events. This momentous event is commemorated by the APEC Sculpture Garden in Da Nang – now upgraded to APEC Park, with its striking architectural highlight, the "High-Flying Kite"...

For example, in early 2026, in Hai Chau ward, right where the Han River connects with Da Nang Bay before flowing into the East Sea, the people of Da Nang will solemnly inaugurate the headquarters of the International Finance Center's Executive Office... - one of many events that will contribute to creating a new "Han River miracle" on the threshold of a new era of national development.

That one day ushered in a new era, that one day brought about new opportunities for development for Da Nang!

Developing from a heritage foundation

A new era of development not only involves the creation of new things and the opening of paths towards the future, but also requires cherishing and preserving the heritage of our ancestors and valuing the past. Dien Hai Citadel – the forward command center of the defense of Cua Han in the early 19th century and a hot spot in the battle against the invading French-Spanish coalition in 1858 – has been preserved by the people of Da Nang as a special national monument.

The Nguyen Hoang Bridge – renamed Nguyen Van Troi Bridge after liberation – with its rare Poni steel truss arch architecture, built by the Americans in the latter half of the 1960s, is preserved by the people of Da Nang as evidence of the American military landing in Da Nang and their direct participation in the South Vietnamese battlefield from 1965.

Hai Van Pass – a "sea-viewing tower" on the summit of Hai Van Mountain – was jointly restored and renovated by people from Da Nang and Hue as a national monument. The Hoa Tho Textile Factory (SICOVINA), belonging to the Vietnam Cotton and Textile Industry Company, which opened in the early 1960s, was also taken over and resumed operations in late April 1975, expanding to many areas of Quang Nam - Da Nang province, laying the groundwork for its upgrade to Hoa Tho Textile and Garment Joint Stock Corporation from the end of 2006 to the present.

And the Non Nuoc stone carving village, along with the ancient temples and rock inscriptions on the cliffs, is becoming the foundation for the Ngu Hanh Son National Special Monument and Scenic Area to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the not-too-distant future…

That one day ushered in a new era, that one day brought about new opportunities for development for Da Nang!

March 29, 1975 – a day that ushered in a new era – holds even greater promise for development as the two provincial-level administrative units, Da Nang City and Quang Nam Province, are merged from July 2025, becoming the largest city in terms of area. The Da Nang Free Trade Zone no longer has to meticulously calculate every square meter of land within the pre-merger Da Nang City area, but now has the opportunity to expand southward, leveraging not only the advantages of land availability but, and primarily, the brand advantages of Chu Lai Airport and Ky Ha Seaport…

Previously, the preservation of Champa heritage was carried out across two provincial-level administrative units, and the most significant connection between Da Nang city and Quang Nam province before the merger was demonstrated by the Quang Nam Museum handing over a shell and lotus flower from the handle of a Tara Bodhisattva statue to the Da Nang Cham Sculpture Museum – which currently displays the original national treasure – at the end of 2023. Now, after "joining forces," the entire museum sector of the merged Da Nang city will work together to preserve and promote the value of these unparalleled Champa architectural and sculptural heritages…

A new era of development following a day of divergent power, March 29, 1975, must be the culmination of the vision, way of thinking, and labor achievements of the local population, especially the local intellectuals. Many generations of intellectuals from Quang Nam - including those who left their hometown or those who chose Quang Nam as their second home - have possessed vision and way of thinking, thereby creating numerous substantial and high-quality achievements that have contributed to building the brand of Da Nang today.

For example, one cannot fail to mention the decision to maintain the status quo of Phu Ninh Lake, which was struggling under the weight of heavy rains and floods – even during the "great flood" – in 1999. This decision was not a momentary impulse but the product of the collective intelligence and sense of public responsibility of an entire group of intellectuals in the field of water resources, of those who dared to think, dared to act, and dared to take responsibility for the common good…

For example, we cannot fail to mention the intellectual achievement of the collective of intellectuals in the field of construction and architecture who advised that the dragon's head of the Dragon Bridge should face the sea, and more importantly, the bridge's head could only rise from the water's edge on the left bank of the Han River, not following the model of the Han River Bridge's head rising from Tran Phu Street - in order to minimize any vibrations that could negatively affect the artifacts displayed in the Cham Sculpture Museum…

Half a century after liberation, the city on the Han River has come a long way. And from that foundation, Da Nang has the basis to continue expanding its development potential, confidently stepping into a new era.
