In recent years, along with the implementation of the National Target Program on New Rural Construction, many people have boldly changed the structure of crops and livestock.
Phuoc Chi is one of two western border communes of Trang Bang town (Tay Ninh province) with low-lying terrain, with many canals interwoven on agricultural land, the people's lives here mainly depend on rice.
In recent years, along with the implementation of the National Target Program on New Rural Construction, many people in Phuoc Chi commune have boldly changed the structure of crops and livestock.
Among the models of crop and livestock restructuring in Phuoc Chi commune, there is a model of utilizing water surface area to raise fish in cages and a model of combining aquaculture in rice fields of Tram Cat Agricultural - Aquaculture Service Cooperative (Tram Cat Cooperative).
These two typical models of crop and livestock restructuring have been bringing practical results, contributing to improving the lives and developing the family economy of members.
The predecessor of Tram Cat Cooperative is Tram Cat Aquaculture Cooperative Group. In September 2021, Tram Cat Cooperative was established in Phuoc Chi border commune with 45 members.
Members of Tram Cat Cooperative focus on aquaculture, seafood processing and seafood products.
After more than 3 years of development, the cooperative now has 53 members, with a total fish farming area of about 5.3 hectares.
Each member of Tram Cat Cooperative raises from 5,000 to 10,000 fish fry, including snakehead fish. Each batch of fish takes an average of 5 to 6 months to raise. The profit from fish farming helps many households in the group escape poverty.
Taking advantage of the water surface area of the Rach Tram canal in front of her house, the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy An, a member of Tram Cat Cooperative, residing in Phuoc Long hamlet, Phuoc Chi commune, has invested in nearly 25 cages to raise snakehead fish.

After more than 3 years of farming, up to now, the economic life of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thuy An's family, a member of Tram Cat Cooperative, residing in Phuoc Long Hamlet, Phuoc Chi Commune, Trang Bang Town (Tay Ninh Province) has gradually stabilized.
Ms. Thuy An shared: before, because she had no land to produce, she worked as a worker in an industrial park, her monthly income was only enough to cover daily living expenses.
In 2020, with the encouragement and guidance of Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang - Director of Tram Cat Cooperative, she started to pool all her capital in the house to make cages and buy snakehead fish fry to raise.
After many effective fish batches, her family has now developed 25 cages, with 3 batches of fish each year harvesting about 50 tons of commercial snakehead fish, with a stable selling price of over 40,000 VND/kg, estimated profit of about 250 million VND/year.
According to Ms. An, in addition to exporting commercial fish, to diversify products and increase value, she is processing one-sun dried snakehead fish products.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang - Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Tram Cat Cooperative said that in the past, the economic source of local people mainly came from rice production. However, with intensive rice cultivation, there were 2 crops per year, and the price of rice after harvest was still low.
After many years of struggling and searching for a new direction to develop the family economy, realizing that the area of hamlets along the Vam Co Dong River has favorable natural conditions with many canals suitable for aquaculture, he pioneered in implementing a model of fish farming combined with rice growing.
According to Mr. Giang, in 2018, after careful research, he began to renovate a part of his family's rice field to invest in the first batch of snakehead fish. After more than 5 months, the profit from this batch of fish was 3 times higher than the total rice production for the whole year. Currently, his family owns 13 cages, each with an area of nearly 20 square meters, with 7,000 snakehead fish in each cage.
Not only enriching himself, Mr. Giang also actively shares his farming experience with many local people, forming a cooperative specializing in raising snakehead fish.
By August 2021, with the encouragement of the Farmers' Association of Phuoc Chi commune, Mr. Giang and 45 fish farming households in the area jointly established Tram Cat agricultural - aquaculture service cooperative.
Currently, the cooperative has developed over 50 members, with a total farming area of about 5.3 hectares. The cooperative mainly develops a model of raising fish in cages, with an average area of about 18 square meters per cage, and raising about 5,000 fish.
After 5 months, the harvest was about 900kg, with a selling price of 43,000 VND. The capital cost was 33.7 million VND, after deducting expenses, the farmer had a profit of about 5 million VND per fish cage.
In addition, some members are implementing and expanding the fish farming model combined with rice cultivation transferred by the Agricultural Extension Center from 2022 with an area of about 3 hectares.
According to Mr. Giang, from now until Tet, the cooperative plans to harvest about 200,000 fish, about 34 tons of fresh fish. Of which, 1 ton will be processed into dried fish.
This is a new product that cooperative members have implemented since 2021 to present, aiming to increase product value and profits from snakehead fish farming.
Talking about future plans, Mr. Giang shared that currently, the Cooperative is building a process to register for VietGAP, at the same time, aiming to register OCOP products to enter supermarket chains, expand the distribution market, and ensure output for the Cooperative's products.
