In 2022, US Central Command assessed that Iran's long-range missile arsenal had more than 3,000 missiles. Photo: @ NBC10 Philadelphia. And in the current conflict, there are also assessments that Iran planned to start with between 750 and 1,000 ballistic missiles with enough range to strike Israel. Of these, 370 are believed to have been fired at Israel, meaning that between a third and a half of these weapons have now been used. Photo: @ NT News.
In the latest move, the Israeli military announced that it had destroyed a third of Iran's long-range surface-to-surface missile launchers since the conflict began on June 13. Photo: @ The War Zone. Specifically, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they have destroyed more than 120 surface-to-surface missile launchers since the current fighting began. Photo: @Israel Defense Forces.
This figure is equivalent to one-third of the surface-to-surface missile launchers the Iranian regime possesses, the Israel Defense Forces asserted. Photo: @Damien Symon. However, this figure shows that the Israel Defense Forces are only referring to long-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile launchers, which can reach targets in Israel. Photo: @ The Israel Defense Forces also specifically described attacks on the launchers, rather than the missiles fired from them. Photo: @ The War Zone.
But it’s also worth noting that some of the launchers were located in caves in Iran, while others were dispersed across the ground. So it’s unclear how many of the launchers left the caves after the fighting began, or whether Israel managed to seal off some of the missile launchers by striking the entrances to those caves. Additionally, hunting down these missile launchers is a significant challenge, made much more complicated by the considerable distances Israeli fighter jets must operate from, while Israel's aerial refueling capabilities are also severely limited.
