On August 30, Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount both suffered injuries in the 3-2 win over Burnley in the third round of the Premier League. This could cause them to miss the upcoming matches against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Daily Mail said this is an important turning point that makes MU more determined to keep Mainoo in this summer transfer window. Previously, the English midfielder expressed his desire to leave on loan to get regular playing time.

"Mainoo insists he wants to leave to play and develop his career, but MU wants to keep him," journalist Fabrizio Romano wrote on X.

Coach Ruben Amorim also confirmed that he wants to keep Mainoo and expects him to compete fiercely with Bruno Fernandes for the starting position. Previously, the Portuguese coach himself affirmed that "Mainoo does not have enough qualities to play in the defensive midfield position".

In a recent interview, coach Amorim spoke frankly about Mainoo's future: "I want Kobbie to stay. He needs to fight for his position. MU needs Kobbie, that will not change."

Under Amorim, Mainoo has not played as much as he would have liked. This has been the case since last season, when Mainoo was left out of the Europa League final against Tottenham. Since the start of 2025, he has made just nine Premier League appearances.

MU won hard at home. Late on August 30, Manchester United had their first victory in the Premier League when they defeated Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford.
