Bought 240 old Defenders to modify, after 9 years made a profit of nearly 70 million USD

When Land Rover announced the end of the Defender in 2016, many saw it as the end of an icon. But for Charles R. Fawcett, it was a bargain.

When Land Rover announced the end of production of the classic Defender in 2016, many saw it as the end of an icon. But for Charles R. Fawcett, founder of Twisted Automotive, it was the start of a bold investment plan.

Knowing that the classic Defender line would be completely replaced by a new model, Fawcett ordered 240 Defenders, even though he did not have enough capital to pay for the entire order.

Thanks to his relationship with Land Rover, he was able to secure a cash-on-delivery deal and a 14.8% discount for large orders, bringing the price down to around £22,600 per car. In total, 239 Defenders were delivered to Twisted.

Instead of reselling the original cars for a quick profit, Fawcett chose to modify each one, aiming at the restomod market - which is growing rapidly among high-end car enthusiasts.

The first Defenders sold by Twisted cost between £70,000 and £90,000 (about 2-3 billion VND), but over time, this price has increased significantly, currently fluctuating between £180,000 and £320,000 (ie from 5.5 to nearly 10 billion VND) per car.

Each build takes around 1,500 hours of work, Fawcett says, using components and techniques Twisted has developed over 25 years. “We build cars that not everyone needs, but a lot of people want,” he says.

This gamble not only brought direct profits from each car, but also helped Twisted grow steadily over the past 9 years, with total revenue exceeding 50 million pounds (equivalent to more than 1,500 billion VND).

Of the 240 purchased, just over 20 remain unsold. Once they’re gone, the chance to own a classic Defender that’s been fully upgraded by Twisted will be all but gone.

From a seemingly risky decision, Charles Fawcett demonstrated his business acumen: turning the classic Defender from an "outdated" model into a globally sought-after luxury item, while also earning huge profits.
