Blood plum gardens in Hoang Su Phi district have begun the harvest season. |
Coming to Sui Thau village, Chien Pho commune these days, it is easy to see the image of people urgently harvesting Blood plums. Each basket of fresh red plums just picked on the hill is quickly transported by the people to the district's central market to sell, or wholesale to traders who come to buy. Ms. Tai Thi Chum, Sui Thau village said: My family has over 2 hectares of Blood plums. Previously, due to the low selling price, mainly to serve the needs of the family, we paid little attention to taking care of the plum garden, rarely pruning branches, weeding, and fertilizing the trees. In recent years, the selling price of Blood plums has increased many times, ranging from 30 to 80 thousand VND/kg, and there are cooperatives in the area that directly come to buy. Realizing the economic value of Blood plum trees, families in the village have proactively fertilized the trees, some households have even invested in automatic watering systems, using nylon to cover young fruits to avoid the impact of insects. On average, each year, my family's income from the Blood plum garden reaches 40 - 60 million VND, contributing significantly to increasing income and improving family life.

Chairman of the People's Committee of Chien Pho Commune, Lu Seo Seng, said: The whole commune currently has 154.7 hectares of Blood plum, of which the harvest area is more than 35 hectares. In 2022, the commune mobilized people to plant 14 hectares. In the past time, the commune government has strengthened coordination with specialized departments of the district to open training courses, instructing people on techniques to renovate and care for plum gardens. Propagating and mobilizing people to plant trees at the right density, prune and create canopy with the right techniques, actively applying science and technology in the process of planting and caring for trees, aiming at sustainable development of local Blood plum trees in the direction of concentrated commodity production, contributing to increasing income, eliminating hunger and reducing poverty for people.
Blood plum is a native plum variety, with a special aroma and astringency compared to Tam Hoa plum and Hau plum in other localities. Blood plum is the name given by the local people to this plum variety because when cut, the fruit is dark red, sweet, and less sour. Up to now, Hoang Su Phi district has over 400 hectares of Blood plum, with an average yield of 500 - 1,000 tons/crop. Blood plum acreage is concentrated in communes with cool climates such as: Chien Pho, Thang Tin, Po Lo, Dan Van, Then Chu Phin. Recently, the district has also promoted development in communes with suitable climate and soil conditions such as: Ban Phung, Tung San, Nang Don. This plum variety has the characteristics of ripening, red skin, sweet taste, and is popular with everyone, with prices ranging from 30 - 80 thousand VND/kg, sometimes up to more than 100 thousand VND/kg. This plum ripens later than other plum varieties, and is harvested around the end of June, so it often has a high price.
Identifying this as a native fruit tree variety with high economic value, Hoang Su Phi district has implemented a number of incentive mechanisms to support people to expand the area such as: Supporting seedlings; training and guiding techniques for planting, caring for, and renovating plum gardens for farming households. In particular, the district's agencies have coordinated with units to build a Hoang Su Phi Blood Plum certification brand and were granted the "Hoang Su Phi Blood Plum" trademark certificate by the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Science and Technology on June 22, 2022. Through the successful construction of the certification brand, it has contributed to creating links in the production chain between households and enterprises, cooperatives and from enterprises, cooperatives connecting with the consumer market.
Currently, in the district, there are a number of cooperatives that purchase plums from local people, helping people save on transportation costs and feel secure about the output of the product. In particular, Chien Pho Agricultural and Forestry Products Trading and Service Cooperative also processes a number of products from Mau plums such as: Plum syrup, dried plums, plum jam, plum wine... receiving good feedback from consumers.
According to the leader of the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in early 2023, hail occurred in the district when the plum trees were bearing young fruit, thus affecting the yield of Blood plums this year. However, the price is still high, and people are currently preparing for a large harvest. In the coming time, the district will continue to encourage people to expand the area in areas with suitable climates, apply techniques to planting and caring for trees, aiming at sustainable development of native Blood plum trees.
