Under the jackfruit trees, Mr. Cao Ngoc Ha (born in 1982), in Kim Bang village 2, Minh Hoa commune, is quietly taking care of each bee colony. Equipped with a very professional protective suit, Mr. Ha carefully turns over each ash leaf on the beehives, checking to see if there is enough honey to harvest the new batch.
With nearly 8 years of beekeeping experience, Mr. Ha shared: “Bees have a very high flocking characteristic and are sensitive to external influences such as weather, light and temperature. Therefore, beekeepers must not only take care of them according to techniques but also really “understand” the bees, listen to every buzzing sound, every small movement in the hive. Only then will the bee colony be healthy, produce sweet, delicious honey, and have a beautiful color.”
Starting beekeeping in 2018, Mr. Ha spent all his family's capital to buy 5 beehives, each costing 1 million VND. In the first days of bringing the bees home, he lost sleep and appetite, researching and learning about beekeeping techniques in books, newspapers, and social networks. At that time, his family lived in an area that was frequently flooded from September to November, which greatly affected beekeeping. If he was not careful, the bees would get sick or leave. His diligence and hard work helped him multiply the colony successfully, and in the first year he collected more than 30 liters of honey.

In 2019, when he moved his house according to the commune's policy to settle in a new economic zone to avoid flooding, he brought his beehive to the back of his garden and planted fruit trees such as jackfruit and guava to create shade, continuing to multiply his beekeeping. Mr. Ha was also supported by the local government with 5 more beehives, creating conditions for him to participate in learning experiences in Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh, which has helped him become more professional in developing his beekeeping career. Currently, he has 42 beehives, helping his family earn nearly 100 million VND each year.
As for Mr. Dinh Minh Tuong, in Dang Hoa village, Hoa Son commune, his working day begins with meticulously taking care of 50 beehives in his garden. He considers the bees as his close friends through countless honey seasons. To further motivate his successful beekeeping model, in 2024 he was supported with 10 more beehives under the economic development project for ethnic minority areas.
Mr. Tuong shared that the advantage of Hoa Son is that it has a large forest area and abundant wild flowers, thanks to which the honey always has a fragrant smell, sweet honey, and a beautiful golden color. Last year, his family's bee colony produced nearly 400 liters of honey. With a selling price of about 200,000 VND per liter, his family earned nearly 80 million VND. In addition, he also breeds more bees and sells beekeeping tools, creating a stable source of income.
In addition to Mr. Tuong's family, there are currently nearly 40 households in Hoa Son commune developing the beekeeping profession. Hoa Son has also established the Hoa Son Agricultural Cooperative, producing Hoa Son honey products with 3-star OCOP quality.
Currently, the entire Minh Hoa district has developed over 5,700 honey bee colonies, concentrated in the communes of Xuan Hoa, Trung Hoa, Hong Hoa, Hoa Hop, Hoa Son... Each year, honey output reaches about 57,000 kg, with production value reaching over 5.5 billion VND. By the end of 2025, we strive to increase the total number of honey bee colonies to 7,000 colonies, with honey output reaching over 70,000 kg, contributing to the restructuring of the agricultural and rural economy in the district.
Vice Chairman of Minh Hoa District People's Committee Dinh Tien Dung said that beekeeping has been bringing a stable source of income, contributing to improving the lives and reducing poverty for local people, especially ethnic minorities. Currently, localities are having many policies to support people to expand their scale, increase value, gradually build trust with consumers, and affirm their brands in the market.
