Nguyen Anh Vu (18 years old) is a poor student from the coastal area of Quang Phu commune, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province.

From a young age, Vu lived with his elderly maternal great-grandmother and grandmother. Despite his difficult family circumstances and many hardships, Vu was always well-behaved and very studious.

To help Nguyen Anh Vu stay confident on his path to school, the Roòn Border Guard Station (Quang Binh Border Guard Command) has adopted him and placed him in their care.

The five-year journey of "planting seeds" by these military-uniformed "foster fathers" provided great motivation, helping Vu realize his dream of being admitted to the Border Guard Academy.

Vu's proud achievement is the "sweet fruit" of love that this poor student from the coastal village dedicates to his family and his "foster fathers" at the Roòn Border Guard Post.

Speaking with us, Major Nguyen Son Binh, Political Officer of the Roon Border Guard Post, could not hide his pride and emotion when talking about Anh Vu - the unit's diligent and academically gifted "adopted son".

Vu's family circumstances were extremely difficult. His parents separated, his father went away to work, his mother remarried and lived elsewhere, leaving Vu to live with his elderly maternal great-grandmother and grandmother. At that time, Vu's education was almost completely interrupted.

Sharing Vũ's difficulties, in 2019, the Roòn Border Guard Station decided to take him in and care for him at the unit so that he could receive better care, upbringing, and education.

Major Nguyen Son Binh recalled: “When Vu first arrived at the outpost, he was in junior high school, very small and frail! The unit sent medical personnel to examine and treat Vu's teeth, and at the same time assigned the Community Mobilization Team and the Youth Union to take care of him, guide him, train him in proper living habits, sleep patterns, and encourage him to strive in his studies. After one year living at the unit, Vu gained 12kg and adopted the military lifestyle very well.”

Since becoming an "adopted child" of the Roòn Border Guard Post, Vũ has also become a "junior soldier" of the unit, gradually getting used to military life with its routines, meals, and sleeping arrangements... all in accordance with regulations.

In his new environment, Anh Vu not only received care and guidance but also the attention, protection, and love of his "foster fathers" in the unit.

Nguyen Anh Vu used this as motivation to constantly strive, overcome his inferiority complex, and diligently study and train so as not to disappoint the trust and love of his "foster fathers" in military uniform. Vu's academic results also improved significantly, especially in his final years of high school, where he achieved excellent results and was selected for the school's gifted student team.

During his time living and studying with the officers and soldiers of the Roòn Border Guard Post, Nguyen Anh Vu came into contact with and appreciated the noble values of soldiers towards the Fatherland and the people, especially the silent contributions and sacrifices made by the "border guard foster fathers" in managing and protecting the homeland's border.

This contributed to fostering a love for his homeland and a sense of responsibility in the young student regarding his studies and guiding him towards a proper future.

Nguyen Anh Vu shared: “When I first arrived at the Border Guard Post, I wasn't used to the new environment, so I was quite worried and shy. However, the officers here are very friendly, always watching over me, encouraging me, and guiding me in many things. They are especially caring and supportive of my studies, providing everything from school bags and pens to school uniforms… I feel so lucky and proud to be the child of these ‘border guard foster fathers.’ I tell myself that I must always strive to study hard, determined to fulfill my dream of becoming a border guard soldier, and contribute my efforts alongside my ‘foster fathers’ to protect and build our homeland.”

In the loving embrace and care of his "border guard foster fathers," and with his own determination, Nguyen Anh Vu not only completed his high school program with high achievements, but he also brought pride to his family, village, and the "foster fathers" of the Roòn Border Guard Post, as he became the first "son" of the Quang Binh Border Guard to be admitted to the Border Guard Academy - one of the leading schools in the entire army, training generations of border management and protection officers.

The news about the poor boy from the sandy area of Quang Phu, Quang Trach district, who scored 25.4 points and successfully passed the entrance exam to the Border Guard Academy, is not only a joy for Vu, his family, and his unit, but also a shared joy for the entire fishing village.

Ms. Le Thi Tam (Vu's grandmother) emotionally shared: "When Vu ran home to tell me the news, I was so happy I cried and felt very excited and proud of him. My family is grateful to the Party, the local government, and especially the Border Guard soldiers who have taught, loved, and helped Vu achieve the success he has today."

According to the leader of the Roòn Border Guard Station, as one of the "Adopted Children of the Border Guard Station," Nguyen Anh Vu had become familiar with and adapted well to military life. Therefore, when he officially became a new student at the Border Guard Academy, Vu was very excited, happy, and not too surprised to be starting his studies in a new environment.

While studying and training in the military environment, Anh Vu will continue to mature, soon becoming a Border Guard soldier, following in the footsteps of his forefathers, preserving the tradition of managing and firmly protecting the sovereignty and security of the nation's borders and islands.

To support and encourage Anh Vu on his new journey, the head of the Quang Binh Border Guard Command, along with representatives from various units and localities, presented him with many meaningful and practical gifts to help him before his enrollment.

Colonel Ngo Van Dung, Deputy Political Commissar of the Quang Binh Provincial Border Guard Command, said that in implementing the Party and State's policy and the Standing Committee of the Border Guard Party Committee's program "Adopted Children of Border Guard Posts" and "Helping Children Go to School," the Standing Committee of the Provincial Border Guard Command's Party Committee has directed units to organize and implement the program seriously, strictly, and effectively.

Over the past period, the units have performed very well, creating all favorable conditions so that the children in the program receive good care for their physical and mental well-being, attend school, and achieve high results in their studies and training.

In particular, this year, Nguyen Anh Vu, the "adopted child" of the Roòn Border Guard Post, was admitted to the Border Guard Academy. This is a great achievement and joy for the officers, soldiers, and the unit that have guided and nurtured these children, helping them to grow and contribute to their homeland and country. This will be a shining example for the children in the "Adopted Children of the Border Guard Post" and "Helping Children Go to School" programs to learn from and emulate.

In the coming period, the Quang Binh Border Guard will focus on directing and implementing this program effectively, contributing to bringing meaning and spreading the humanitarian value of the program, helping to fulfill the dreams of disadvantaged students so that they can all go to school.

The exemplary dedication to learning and the perseverance of poor student Nguyen Anh Vu are the "sweet fruits" sown from the "green shoots" of love and responsibility of border guards, dành for students and people in difficult circumstances in border and island areas.

Through the "Adopted Children of Border Guard Posts" program, these "fathers in military uniforms" have become a trusted and reliable support system for poor students along the border, enabling them to attend school with peace of mind, pursue education, and later become useful citizens.

For these children, the officers and soldiers of the border guard post are both fathers and teachers, role models, guiding them in their studies and teaching them basic life skills.
