The Vice President of the Association of Overseas Vietnamese in Macau said that the biggest obstacle for Vietnamese people working in Macau is the language barrier... leading to difficulties in work.
In order to propagate and disseminate legal knowledge to Southeast Asian workers, on November 10 in the Macau Special Administrative Region (China), the Macau Construction Mass Alliance coordinated with agencies such as the Police Department, Labor Department, Health Department, Fire Prevention and Fighting Department, Civil Affairs Department, Macau Employment Brokerage Association, Associations of Countries in Macau, mainly the Association of Overseas Vietnamese in Macau, to organize activities to propagate the law and prevent crime, providing a lot of useful knowledge about local laws for Southeast Asian workers in general and Vietnamese workers in particular.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Hua Long Thong, Vice President of the Macau Construction Mass Alliance, said that Macau currently has more than 180,000 foreign workers, including about 60,000 workers from Southeast Asia, filling the gap in local human resources and contributing greatly to Macau's economic and social development.
However, on the one hand, due to factors such as language barriers and cultural differences, Southeast Asian workers face many difficulties in interacting with local people, adapting to the working environment and in daily life. In addition, some people may lack knowledge of local laws and do not fully understand their rights and responsibilities.
Speaking to VNA reporters in Hong Kong and Macau, Ms. Dinh Thi Bich Ngoc, Vice President of the Association of Overseas Vietnamese in Macau, said the biggest obstacle for Vietnamese people working in Macau is language barriers, differences in lifestyle, customs and practices, etc., leading to difficulties in work.
Every year, the Macau side organizes a wide-ranging dissemination of local laws to Vietnamese people living and working in Macau. In addition, the Association also regularly participates in Macau government activities so that people can exchange culture with the local people and other countries.
Mr. Au Duong Quang Cau, Chairman of the Macau Employment Brokers Association, said that the number of Vietnamese domestic helpers accounts for the majority of Vietnamese workers in Macau. Vietnamese workers are hard-working and willing to work overtime.
However, Vietnamese domestic workers often have difficulty communicating with their employers due to language barriers, especially for workers over 60 years old, so it takes a long time to integrate into the local culture. Therefore, the government and organizations in Macau regularly organize propaganda activities to help workers understand Macau laws, creating favorable conditions for workers to work.
Ms. Doan Thi Thu Huyen, a police officer at Macau detention camp, shared that Vietnamese workers are highly appreciated by local people for their diligence and eagerness to learn.
According to Ms. Huyen, Vietnam should open additional training courses on labor law, Macau's legal culture and language so that workers coming to Macau will better understand the obligations and rights of workers in Macau and support them in their work.
This year is the 9th year that the Macau Construction Mass Alliance continues to coordinate with relevant departments to organize activities to raise legal awareness for Southeast Asian workers.
Through this activity, the organizer hopes to enhance the legal awareness of Southeast Asian workers, better understand Macau society, integrate into community life and receive corresponding attention, further enhance their awareness of understanding, complying with the law and protecting their own rights to promote social integration.
According to statistics, there are currently about 7-8 million Vietnamese people living, working and studying in Macau, most of whom are women working as domestic helpers and workers in restaurants and hotels.
The Vietnamese people are highly appreciated by the local government for their solidarity, close-knit lifestyle, mutual support, preservation of traditional beauty and compliance with the laws of the host country.
In addition to participating in listening to and disseminating legal knowledge, the Vietnamese Association in Macau and many associations from the Philippines, Indonesia, Nepal, and Myanmar also contributed many special performances, enriching the activities of the legal propaganda day./.
