We visited the flower garden of Mr. Vu Minh Thinh in Binh Dan village, My Tan commune (Nam Dinh city) at the very moment his family's lily garden was bustling with customers. While nimbly pruning each lily branch, he happily shared his story of establishing himself and his business.

In 2016, after a long period of working various jobs, and encouraged by his family, Mr. Thinh decided to return to his hometown to start a business, focusing on developing the traditional flower cultivation. Every day, Mr. Thinh accompanies his father to the fields to work the land, learning how to care for, fertilize, detect pests and diseases, spray pesticides, and sow seeds for various types of flowers. Flower cultivation is a specialized profession; not everyone can succeed without thoroughly understanding the characteristics of each flower species as well as the methods of care and pest control. While working, he also independently researched and learned about scientific and technical knowledge, gradually accumulating a lot of experience. Mr. Thinh said: "To have the business I have today is the result of a long process of accumulating experience and capital. From having only 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of land belonging to my family, I realized that there was a lot of uncultivated land in the Red River floodplain area, so I boldly proposed and received support from the local Party committee and government to bid for nearly 1.5 hectares to grow flowers."

Having acquired land, Mr. Thinh borrowed capital from friends and family, improved the soil quality, and built suitable infrastructure for growing various types of flowers. Understanding market demand, he researched and introduced many valuable flower varieties such as lilies, trumpet lilies, chrysanthemums, gladioli, and more. In addition, he invested in new equipment such as a generator, sprayers, water pumps, a mini-plow, hundreds of light bulbs, and other tools and equipment to ensure self-sufficiency in production and cultivation. His efforts have been rewarded, as he is one of the young people in the commune who has achieved the highest economic efficiency in flower cultivation. Over the years, Mr. Thinh has gained experience in the techniques of growing and caring for various types of flowers, especially ensuring they bloom precisely on holidays and festivals. This is the most difficult step, requiring careful planning; even a slight oversight can result in flowers not blooming, or blooming stunted, unattractive, and losing value, especially with lilies. Besides meticulous care, Mr. Thinh has also invested in a cold storage facility covering over 40 square meters, used for both preserving flower bulbs and fresh flowers.

While working, Mr. Thinh also dedicated time to researching and learning, gradually applying scientific and technological advancements to production, participating in training courses, guidance, and exchanging experiences on flower and ornamental plant cultivation organized by government agencies and organizations. To date, with a total area of over 5,000 square meters, Mr. Thinh produces more than 7,000 flower plants of various types, rotating according to the season, generating revenue of 700-800 million VND per year, creating jobs for 6 permanent workers with an average salary of 7-8 million VND per person per month. Thanks to the high quality of his flowers and his reputable business practices, traders from within and outside the province increasingly come to his house to place orders. At times, he cannot supply enough flowers to traders in districts within the province and neighboring provinces and cities such as Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Thanh Hoa, and Hai Phong...

With his increasingly extensive production experience, Mr. Thinh has become a partner, sharing his experience, exchanging knowledge, and supporting local households involved in flower and ornamental plant cultivation to increase their income and improve their living standards.

“Growing flowers is more economically efficient than growing rice, and it suits the land of our homeland. My family and many other families in the commune have achieved stable incomes and improved living standards thanks to flower cultivation,” Mr. Thinh added. Besides that, Mr. Thinh also collaborates with several small-scale producers in the commune, connecting with customers inside and outside the province to purchase seedlings and flowers from the farmers. This contributes to the consumption of a large quantity of flower seedlings and commercial flowers, creating jobs, increasing income for production and business households, and bringing local products to more customers.

Through his dynamism, innovative thinking, and proactive approach, Mr. Vu Minh Thinh has successfully developed an economic model based on flower cultivation, yielding high economic returns and contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality, while also promoting the role of young people in family and social economic development.
