Adaptation
Although not a major rice-growing area in the Mekong Delta, Ca Mau, with its advantageous geographical location, soil, water resources, and unique ecological conditions, is well-suited for producing high-quality, safe, and organic rice. This forms a crucial foundation for the province's rice industry to develop in a value-added direction.
The province currently has a total rice cultivation area of approximately 314,000 hectares per year, with an estimated production of 1.9 million tons, of which about 90,000 hectares are rice-shrimp farming. Identified as one of the key industries, Ca Mau has been implementing many solutions to develop rice production towards high quality, environmental friendliness, and adaptation to climate change .

According to Mr. Nguyen Tran Thuc, Head of the Crop Production and Plant Protection Sub-Department of Ca Mau province, the most noticeable aspect of the rice industry's transformation in recent years is the rapid change in variety structure. Currently, high-quality rice varieties and specialty fragrant varieties occupy almost the entire cultivated area in the province.
Alongside crop variety changes, many advanced technical processes have been widely applied to improve the productivity, quality, and value of rice grains. Production models such as "3 reductions, 3 increases," "1 must, 5 reductions," integrated pest management (IPM), plant health management (IPHM), soil health management, and the shift to organic fertilizers have proven effective. In addition, safe rice, organic rice, ecological rice, rice-shrimp, and rice-fish farming models have also been implemented, contributing to increased income for farmers.
As a result, many rice-growing areas in the province have met standards such as VietGAP , GlobalGAP, and Vietnamese and international organic standards (USDA, EU, JAS), gradually conquering both domestic and export markets.
Following this direction, with 278 members cultivating rice on shrimp farming land, the Ba Dinh Agricultural, Aquatic and Service Cooperative (Vinh Loc commune) focuses on using high-quality rice varieties such as ST24, ST25, BL9 and strictly adheres to organic production processes.

Mr. Nong Van Thach, Director of Ba Dinh Cooperative, shared that thanks to close links with businesses in supplying input materials and selling products, each rice crop brings cooperative members an average income of 45-50 million VND/ha.
At Kinh Dớn Agricultural Service Cooperative (Đá Bạc commune), the transition to high-quality rice varieties and the application of advanced farming processes were implemented early on. This is also one of the areas selected to participate in the Project "Sustainable Development of 1 Million Hectares of High-Quality and Low-Emission Rice Specialization Associated with Green Growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030".
In line with current trends
In the Ca Mau Province's Key Agricultural Products Development Program for the period 2026-2030, the goal is to achieve a rice production of over 1.9 million tons by 2030, with 70% serving consumption outside the province and for export. The area of high-quality, low-emission rice will reach approximately 55,000 hectares; over 85% of the area will use certified rice varieties, over 70% will use high-quality rice varieties, and over 60% will apply advanced farming practices. As a result, the profits of rice farmers are expected to increase by over 30%.

To realize this goal, Mr. Nguyen Tran Thuc said that the province will continue to refine the planning of concentrated rice production areas according to specific ecological conditions; promote digital transformation in production; strengthen value chain linkages; and build brands and traceability systems for products. These are key solutions to develop the rice industry in a modern, efficient, and sustainable direction.
Within the overall picture of the Mekong Delta's rice industry, a region playing a core role in ensuring national food security, Ca Mau rice is gradually asserting itself on its own path.
Organic and eco-friendly rice products, characteristic of Ca Mau, perfectly align with current consumer trends, as both domestic and international markets increasingly prioritize clean, safe, and environmentally friendly products.
Mr. Le Thanh Tung,Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Rice Industry Association.
Reducing seed usage, fertilizer use, pesticide use, post-harvest losses, and emissions... not only increases profits for rice farmers but also contributes to climate change adaptation. This is also the path to sustainable development for Ca Mau's rice industry, creating long-term value for farmers and the province's agriculture as a whole.
