Record-breaking heatwave hits many European countries.

A phenomenon known as a "heat dome" is currently covering much of Western and Central Europe, causing temperatures to soar and posing a significant risk of extreme weather events.

A phenomenon known as a "heat dome," containing warm air from North Africa trapped beneath a high-pressure system across Western Europe, is causing the kind of scorching weather that doesn't typically occur until mid-summer in Europe. Earlier this week, countries like the UK, Ireland, and France all recorded record-breaking heat, and this could spread and continue for several more days.

On average, the Earth is warming by about 1.4°C compared to pre-industrial levels (defined as the period between 1850 and 1900). Meanwhile, Europe is warming by about 2.4°C compared to pre-industrial levels.

The UK Met Office says that during the current unusually hot weather across the country, temperatures in some areas could reach 35 degrees Celsius, the highest May temperature ever recorded.

On May 25th, a temperature of 33.5 degrees Celsius was recorded at Heathrow Airport in London, breaking the previous record of 32.8 degrees Celsius set in May 1922 and repeated in May 1944.

In France, May 25th marked the beginning of the first widespread heatwave of May, a month typically considered mild. According to the French meteorological agency Météo-France, average national temperatures reached unprecedented levels for this time of year. In the south and central regions, many weather stations recorded temperatures above 35°C, with some areas approaching 37°C. Even cities that are usually cooler, such as Rennes and Nantes, experienced record-breaking temperatures for the month.

On the same day, in Belgium, the Royal Uccle Meteorological Station in Brussels recorded temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius at several points. This was the highest temperature ever recorded in May since meteorological data began to be systematically compiled.

Meanwhile, Spain and Portugal are predicted to experience the most extreme heat. Some areas in Portugal could record temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius, while southern Spain will reach 38 degrees Celsius. On May 25th, Spain issued yellow heat warnings for some northern regions.
