Drinking hot coffee warms the throat, while drinking cold coffee is good for quenching thirst but can easily damage the respiratory tract lining, causing coughing.

According to Dr. Dang Thanh Do, a specialist in Respiratory Medicine at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi , many people enjoy drinking iced coffee, especially in the summer, because it quenches thirst. However, ice can easily cause the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract to constrict or swell, creating an opportunity for viruses and bacteria to attack.

Hot brewed coffee has a higher content of antioxidants, which helps prevent or slow down cell damage compared to cold coffee. Hot drinks warm the throat and increase blood circulation.

Dr. Do cited American research showing that the ideal average temperature for drinking coffee is 60 degrees Celsius, which can be 8.3 degrees Celsius higher or lower. This temperature ensures the best taste of the beverage.

Healthy adults should not consume more than 400 mg of caffeine per day, equivalent to 4 cups of filter coffee. Teenagers should not consume more than 100 mg of caffeine per day. High caffeine consumption can lead to high blood pressure, increased heart rate, increased palpitations, and consequently, shortness of breath and shallow breathing.

Nutritionist Tran Pham Thuy Hoa from the Nutrition Department advises that to maximize the benefits of coffee, one should limit the amount of sugar, condensed milk, or cream when brewing. Adding too much sugar, condensed milk, or cream stimulates insulin cells in the pancreas. High levels of glucose (sugar) and fat increase the risk of obesity and diabetes.

The best time to drink coffee is from mid to late morning. At this time, cortisol levels in the body are low, and caffeine will increase cortisol levels, helping you stay alert and focused. For those who wake up around 6:30 AM, the ideal time to drink coffee is between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM.
