After the historic 0-6 defeat against Vasco da Gama in the 20th round of the Brazilian Serie A championship in the early morning of August 18, about 100 fans from the Santos ultras group broke into the Rei Pelé training center to express their anger.
According to Globo , Santos fans broke down the parking lot gate, used flares and shouted criticism of the team and the management, especially targeting big star Neymar Jr. They blocked the cars of Neymar and his teammates, hurling insults at the players.
In a video shared on social media, the leader of the Santos ultras group directly confronted Neymar and his teammates, declaring: “What happened today is nothing! I tell you the truth, you deserve a slap in the face!”
The statement, which was captured and circulated on social media, reflected the extreme anger of fans at the team's poor performance. Neymar, who broke down in tears after the match and called it the "biggest shame" of his career, spoke to the fans with CEO Alexandre Mattos.
He tried to calm the situation: “We are trying to change things, but we need support.” However, Neymar’s explanation did not calm the anger. Earlier, Neymar could not hold back tears when his childhood team suffered one of the most embarrassing defeats in history.
In front of tens of thousands of home fans, Neymar's team was completely overwhelmed by Vasco da Gama, another candidate for relegation from the tournament, with 6 goals to nil. Less than an hour after the embarrassing defeat, Santos also announced the sacking of head coach Cleber Xavier.
Globo commented that the 0-6 defeat to Vasco da Gama was the "biggest humiliation" in Santos' history, pushing the team into a serious crisis with the risk of relegation imminent. Santos, currently ranked 15th with 21 points, is only 2 points above the direct relegation spot.
