Russia practices combat with nuclear missiles

The Russian military launched an RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile during a combat exercise to test the capabilities of this weapon system.

"The crew of the 14th Missile Division launched an RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during combat training at the Plesetsk cosmodrome. The training warheads fell to the target area at the Kura training range on the Kamchatka Peninsula," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The Russian military said the test was aimed at checking and confirming the tactical and technical characteristics of the Yars system, as well as allowing the Strategic Missile Forces to complete the process of redeploying the Yars battery to a remote area before firing. "All the set tasks were fulfilled," the Russian Defense Ministry added.

The RS-24 Yars is one of Russia's main ICBMs, first tested in 2007. The missile has a maximum range of 12,000 km and can carry 10 thermonuclear warheads, each with a yield equivalent to 300,000 tons of TNT. The Strategic Missile Forces is one of the five branches of the Russian military, responsible for operating mobile launchers and ICBM silos.

In his State of the Nation Address on February 29, President Vladimir Putin accused the West of trying to weaken Russia. He warned that the consequences of current intervention in Russia would be more dire than in previous stages.

"Opponents should remember that Russia possesses weapons that can strike targets on their territory. This could lead to a conflict using nuclear weapons, which could destroy civilization," the Kremlin boss said.
