In an interview with TASS, CEO of Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Alexei Rakhmanov stated that the strategic nuclear-powered cruiser Emperor Alexander III and the multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine Krasnoyarsk will be put into service by the end of 2023. The two ships are being built by the Sevmash shipyard, a subsidiary of USC.
The Borei-A class Emperor Alexander III was launched in December 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the launching ceremony. This is the seventh nuclear-powered submarine of Project 955 and the fourth of Project 955A in Russia.
The Project 955A (Borei-A) nuclear-powered submarines are designed to form the backbone of Russia’s strategic sea-based nuclear forces. They are armed with 16 Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles as their basic armament. Compared to the original Borei series, the Borei-A submarines have improved stealth, maneuverability, and deep-sea capabilities, as well as an improved weapons control system.
Meanwhile, the Krasnoyarsk belongs to Project 885M (Yasen-M class). This submarine was launched in July 2021. According to TASS, this submarine was deployed to the White Sea in June 2022 to begin sea trials.
