The idea of holding a special Victory Parade in Moscow, in which representatives of all fronts and services that participated in the Great Patriotic War were represented, was first put forward by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin on May 15, 1945. The Victory Day parade was held to commemorate the millions of Soviet soldiers and civilians who died during the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) defending the Fatherland and humanity from fascism. The Soviet Union lost about 27 million people in the Great Patriotic War, the vast majority of whom were civilians. A total of 11,657 people were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for their contributions to the Great Patriotic War (3,051 of whom were posthumously awarded), including 95 women and 44 foreigners. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia resumed the Victory Parade in Moscow in 1995. Since then, the event has been held annually on May 9, only to be postponed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The most recent Victory Day parade, the 78th, will take place in 2023, with the participation of more than 10,000 Russian servicemen and 125 units of ground military equipment. Due to weather and other reasons, the parade of military aviation units was not held. |
