Russia has installed 8 electric engines, improved the fuselage and added a modern flight control system to turn the classic An-2 Colt into the TVS-2MS Partizan heavy transport UAV.
The Siberian Aviation Research Institute named after designer SA Chaplygina has successfully completed the first test flight of the TVS-2MS Partizan heavy transport UAV. According to Reporter.
Although called a UAV, the first flight of the special transport aircraft took place in manned mode, under the control of test pilot Vladimir Barsuk. According to Reporter.
The special multi-purpose transport aircraft TVS-2MS Partizan spent 20 minutes in the air on its first flight, practicing maneuvers at extremely low speeds, only 50 km/h. According to Reporter.
According to the designer's representative, the participation of a pilot in the first flight of the TVS-2MS is necessary to ensure the safety of the testing process and record data. According to Reporter.
The conversion of the legendary An-2 "corn carrier" became known in mid-2021, the Partizan UAV is designed to carry cargo weighing up to 1 ton over distances of up to 1,000 km. According to Reporter.
The special feature of the aircraft is that it is equipped with 8 electric motors located on the lower wings. Thanks to this technical solution, the UAV is capable of taking off from a runway only 50 meters long. According to Reporter.
The TVS-2M Partizan aircraft is expected to be used in many fields. In the unmanned version, it can participate in rescue operations and transport goods to hard-to-reach areas. According to Reporter.
Meanwhile, the manned version will become an alternative to the Mi-8/17 transport helicopters on air routes, taking passengers to remote areas of Russia. According to Reporter.
"As a result of the research, we have received a new generation multi-purpose aircraft with optional control capabilities," the representative of the Siberian Aviation Research Institute emphasized. "Thanks to the presence of a sophisticated control system, the TVS-2MS Partizan can carry out both cargo transportation in fully automatic mode and passenger transportation in manned mode." According to Reporter.
As for the prototype of the Partizan, the Antonov An-2 (NATO code name: Colt) was a highly reliable, single-engine biplane that first flew in 1947 and was the first aircraft designed by Antonov. According to Reporter.
The An-2 has been used as a light transport aircraft capable of carrying 12 passengers or paratroopers, as well as for agricultural work. According to Reporter.
The An-2's ability to fly very slowly and land on a short runway of just 200 m makes it very suitable for operating at makeshift airports. According to Reporter.
With continuous production from 1947 - 1992, the An-2 entered the Guinness Book of Records as the aircraft manufactured for the longest time (45 years) with about 18,000 units produced. According to Reporter.
Basic parameters of An-2 include: Crew of 1 - 2 people; length 12.4 m; upper/lower wingspan 18.2/14.2 m; height 4.1 m; empty weight 3,300 kg, take-off weight 5,500 kg. According to Reporter.
The aircraft is equipped with a Shvetsov ASh-62R propeller engine with a capacity of 1,000 horsepower (750 kW) for a maximum speed of 258 km/h, a ceiling of 4,500 m, and a range of 845 km. According to Reporter.
