Speaking on April 5, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the country will do everything to ensure that no one dares to supply depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine. The official stated: "I want to emphasize once again that we will do everything to ensure that no one dares to take such an irresponsible step."
Earlier, in March, British Defense Minister Annabel Goldie released a written response to a question from a member of the House of Commons in the country's Parliament, stating that London would provide Kiev with ammunition containing depleted uranium to increase the effectiveness of destroying armored vehicles.
Commenting on the decision, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia would be forced to react appropriately to the fact that “the West has collectively begun to use weapons with nuclear components.” Meanwhile, the Russian Embassy in the UK warned London against transferring depleted uranium munitions to Kiev, stressing that such a move could escalate the conflict and that such munitions in Ukraine would affect the health of local residents.
On the same day, speaking in Warsaw, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he hoped Poland could help form a coalition of Western countries to supply fighter jets to Kiev. “As the Polish leadership has shown in forming a tank support coalition, I believe there is an opportunity for a similar coalition to supply fighter jets,” he said.
In recent times, Kiev, hoping to launch a counter-offensive in the coming period, has repeatedly expressed its desire to acquire modern fighter jets such as the American F-16. However, the West has only handed over a number of Soviet MiG fighter jets from the Cold War era, fearing that they would be seen as directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine.
During Mr. Zelensky's visit, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that his country will send 14 MiG-29s to Ukraine.
Also in Warsaw, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the two sides discussed the issue of grain imports. He hopes that the parties will soon make a decision in the coming days to resolve the concerns of Polish farmers regarding duty-free imports of Ukrainian grain.
Earlier the same day, Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Henryk Kowalczyk resigned after a request from Warsaw and several countries in the region to stop duty-free grain imports from Ukraine was rejected by the European Commission.
