During the dry season, the lake's surface area reaches approximately 500 hectares, expanding to 700 to 900 hectares during the rainy season. Lak Lake also preserves the unique cultural values of the indigenous M'nong people.
Surrounding Lake Lăk are rice paddies, interspersed with villages of the M'nông people such as Buôn Lê, Buôn Jun, and Buôn M'liêng. In the M'nông language, the word "Lăk" means "water".

The lake is surrounded by many hills and mountains, especially upstream by the Chu Yang Sin mountain range with a peak reaching 2,442 meters above sea level. Thanks to the pristine forests with their rich vegetation, the water in Lake Lak rarely dries up, even during the dry season in the Central Highlands.
