Vo Thi Ngoc Ngan, commonly known by the nickname "Ngan 98", has just been prosecuted and temporarily detained by the Ho Chi Minh City Police Investigation Agency to investigate the act of producing and trading in counterfeit food products.

Apart from the element related to illegal business practices, the notable point in the case lies in the method of advertising products in the form of "freebies" which is said to have helped consume unlicensed products under the guise of legality.

Information from the investigation agency shows that this trick helped the group earn large revenues for a long time before being discovered.

The case raises many questions about transparency in advertising health protection products, especially weight loss products that are being consumed strongly through social networks.

“Brand representative” image on TikTok

According to the initial investigation results, Ngan 98 directly manages the production, business and financial activities of ZuBu Trading and Service Company Limited and ZuBu Shop Business Household.

Under the title of "image representative", she often appears in promotional videos for products introduced as health protection foods and weight loss aids such as Super Detox X3, X7, X1000.

In addition, there is another product called “Collagen Vegetable Pills”. This type of pill is not on the list of licensed products, does not have a declaration file according to regulations but is still packaged and labeled with the same brand as legal products.

To avoid attention from regulatory agencies, the product packaging clearly states that this is a "free gift, not for sale".

However, this product is distributed simultaneously with the main lines in a complete regimen, which is recommended to be used together to increase weight loss effectiveness.

Product packages are sold on social networks with prices ranging from 870,000 to more than 1.1 million VND, through livestream and online consultation.

Feedback on TikTok

On May 21, Ngan 98 posted a 3-minute response video on her personal TikTok account. In the clip, the character holds a file that is introduced as a petition to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety.

Ngan 98 uploaded a video confirming the product's legitimacy on May 21 (Screenshot).

Ngan affirmed that all the products she represented “have been clearly tested and are of guaranteed quality.” She also said she “sent them for cross-examination” and that the incident showed signs of “staging, slander, and insulting the honor of individuals and businesses.”

In the reading of the document, Ngan said that the company had sent a complaint to the authorities, listing individuals and groups of subjects operating in an organized manner on social networks and e-commerce platforms, suspected of producing and trading in counterfeit goods, fake goods, and goods with fake origins.

This account emphasizes that products such as herbal pills X7 Plus, X1000 or Super Detox X3 all "have clear legal records and are inspected before being exported to distribution partners".

Products are not allowed to be distributed through social networks and livestreams.

The way the product is consumed shows a closed model from production, packaging to advertising and sales, focusing entirely on the digital platform.

Not going through the pharmacy system or traditional distribution channels, ZuBu's products are introduced directly to consumers via Facebook, TikTok and a private hotline.

Approaching customers through consulting videos, weight loss livestreams and before-after images of product use helps create a strong trust effect.

In these contents, Collagen pills are described as “the secret to increasing weight loss effectiveness” and are considered an indispensable part of the treatment.

Leveraging the viral nature of social media has made unlicensed products widely available to consumers without encountering quality control barriers.

According to survey data, this closed sales model helps the group earn hundreds of billions of VND in revenue in the 2023-2024 period.

Authorities are continuing to expand the investigation to clarify the responsibilities of individuals involved in the case and have not yet reached a final conclusion.
