Digging soil in special-use forests to illegally mine gold
On June 21, information from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa said that the unit has just sent a document requesting relevant agencies and local authorities to conduct a comprehensive inspection of forest security in Phu Le commune (Quan Hoa district, Thanh Hoa ), after discovering illegal gold mining there.
In 2020 - 2021, authorities discovered and demolished many camps of "gold thieves" in Pu Luong Nature Reserve.
Previously, on June 5, the force of Phu Le Forest Ranger Station (under the Management Board of Pu Luong Nature Reserve) coordinated with the People's Committee of Phu Le commune (Quan Hoa district) to inspect the forest and discovered signs of digging in the Muong Mu forest area, in compartment 3, sub-compartment 53 (administrative boundary of Tan Phuc village, Phu Le commune) in the special-use forest for the purpose of illegal gold mining.
At the scene, the authorities recorded a hole 0.8 m in diameter and 5 m deep. Under the hole, a horizontal tunnel 26 m long was dug. The hole was dug around May to early June. At the time of discovery of the gold digging hole, the authorities did not find any gold digging suspects or digging tools.
Faced with the above situation, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa requested the Director of the Pu Luong Nature Reserve Management Board to report the incident to the leaders of Quan Hoa District to take measures to comprehensively inspect forest security, inspect areas where special-use forest land is being dug up to extract minerals; and prepare a scene record and scene report.
In case of detecting violators or evidence of violations, a file must be promptly prepared for handling according to regulations. In case of detecting no violators, the People's Committee of Quan Hoa District must report to direct relevant agencies to fill the lake and restore the original state of the forest land.
Thanh Hoa Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has also requested the Standing Committee of the District Party Committee and the People's Committee of Quan Hoa District to direct functional agencies and local authorities to promptly inspect and prevent those who encroach on special-use forest resources.
There was an incident of suffocation in an illegal gold mine that killed 3 gold miners.
Illegal gold mining in the forest area of Pu Luong Nature Reserve (located in Ba Thuoc and Quan Hoa districts) has been going on for many years.
In June 2016, in the forest area of Pu Luong Nature Reserve (in Kit village, Lung Cao commune, Ba Thuoc district), there was an incident of suffocation in an illegal gold mining tunnel, causing the death of 3 gold miners.
The illegal gold mining situation temporarily subsided after the gas suffocation incident, but since mid-2020, local people have discovered that gold miners have returned to illegal gold mining.
The People's Committee of Ba Thuoc District and relevant agencies have developed a plan to prevent illegal gold mining. Many inspections were conducted, camps, water tanks, and machinery were destroyed to prevent illegal gold mining activities, but the gold miners continued to operate afterwards.
At the end of May, the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa province decided to establish a Steering Committee to handle illegal gold mining activities in Ba Thuoc district with the aim of developing plans and organizing forces to handle caves and tunnels to prevent illegal gold mining.
