At the ceremony, Consul General Kieu Thi Hang Phuc highlighted the reason for choosing September 8 every year as the day to “Honor Vietnamese Language” in the overseas Vietnamese community because this is a day of convergence, with many meanings associated with the history of the nation. Activities towards the day to “Honor Vietnamese Language” aim to raise the awareness of the overseas Vietnamese community towards the Vietnamese language, to honor the beauty and value of the Vietnamese language in the community, and at the same time to encourage, motivate and honor organizations, associations and individuals who have made positive contributions to preserving and spreading the Vietnamese language in the overseas Vietnamese community; maintaining the use of Vietnamese in daily communication activities of Vietnamese families and spreading the Vietnamese language to foreigners.

The Consul General suggested that through this activity, the Vietnamese Associations/Management Boards in the Northern Lao provinces regularly strengthen propaganda work, create motivation, improve the quality of teaching and learning Vietnamese in the community, coordinate with local authorities to introduce Vietnamese into teaching at facilities with a large Vietnamese population, support universities and research institutes with Vietnamese departments or subjects to further develop, and make Vietnamese an official foreign language subject alongside other foreign languages.

The Consul General also suggested applying methods to promote the teaching and learning of Vietnamese, such as the teaching and learning of Vietnamese needs to be continuous over a long period of time, implemented synchronously and can be organized in conjunction with festivals, on the occasion of celebrating important national holidays; building Vietnamese bookcases at the headquarters of the Association/Committee; organizing cultural activities such as organizing poetry and song writing competitions, speaking competitions, storytelling competitions... every year in the community to preserve, spread, and promote culture to help our compatriots abroad preserve their own cultural identity, assert themselves and confidently integrate, preserve national identity, and enhance national pride and self-esteem.

Mr. Phi Van Mai, Chairman of the Vietnamese Association of Oudomxay Province, thanked the Consulate General for choosing Oudomxay as the first province to organize the first "Vietnamese Language Honor Day" and thanked the leaders of Oudomxay Province for helping and creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to do business and live in the locality. The Chairman of the Association reported on the activities of the Association, the activities of the local community and responded to the activities launched by the Consulate General, including preserving, maintaining and developing the Vietnamese language for future generations. With financial support from local authorities, the Association has been building a headquarters combined with a bilingual school to provide children of the Vietnamese and Lao communities with an environment to learn the language. Hopefully in the coming time, the Association will continue to receive attention and support from domestic authorities, local authorities and the Consulate General to soon complete the construction of the Association's headquarters and put the school into operation.

At the ceremony, Consul General Kieu Thi Hang Phuc presented 600 student notebooks, gifts from the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense and the Consulate General to students from the Vietnamese and Lao communities in the province with difficult circumstances on the occasion of the new school year opening.
