Martyr Ngo Duc Mai was born on November 6, 1938; his hometown is Dong My village, Hung Tan commune (now Thong Tan commune), Hung Nguyen district. Martyr Ngo Duc Mai enlisted in the army in 1955.
From 1965 to 1967, martyr Ngo Duc Mai was a MIG-17 fighter pilot and a flight platoon member of Company 2, Air Force Regiment 923 (Yen The Air Force), Air Force Division 371, Air Defense - Air Force Service.
Participating in the battle, martyr Ngo Duc Mai was brave, intelligent, and flexible, taking 63 sorties, fighting the enemy with high efficiency: directly shooting down 3 American planes (2 F-4s and 1 A-4), including the plane of American Colonel Norman Gaddis, Deputy Commander of the 12th Tactical Fighter Wing with 4,300 flight hours; creating favorable conditions for his teammates to shoot down many other planes.

With many glorious achievements, martyr Ngo Duc Mai was honored to meet Uncle Ho and was awarded a badge by him; was awarded by the Party and State 1 Military Exploit Medal (Third Class), 2 Military Exploit Medals (Second Class, Third Class).
On June 3, 1967, in an unequal battle with the American F-105 and F-4 formations in the sky of Ha Bac, First Lieutenant and pilot Ngo Duc Mai heroically sacrificed himself... Martyr Ngo Duc Mai was buried at the Martyrs' Cemetery of Vu Xa Commune (now Cam Ly Commune), Luc Nam District, Bac Giang Province.

On August 30, 1995, martyr Ngo Duc Mai was honored by the State with the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces... To commemorate and recognize the contributions of martyr pilot, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Ngo Duc Mai, the Party Committee, government and people of Nghe An province decided to name a new street in Vinh City after him on December 10, 2010.
Promoting the morality of "When drinking water, remember its source", in order to remember the heroic martyrs who sacrificed for the Fatherland and educate the tradition for future generations, in accordance with the wishes of the family of the Hero of the People's Armed Forces, Martyr Ngo Duc Mai, the Party Committee - People's Council - People's Committee - Fatherland Front Committee of Thong Tan commune and the family decided to build the Mausoleum of Martyr Ngo Duc Mai; move the remains of the Hero of the People's Armed Forces, Martyr Ngo Duc Mai to be buried in this mausoleum.

The memorial service and burial of martyr Ngo Duc Mai's remains took place very solemnly; many comrades of Hero of the Armed Forces martyr Ngo Duc Mai and officials and people of Nghe An province came to see the martyr off to his final resting place./.
