Chinese girl has sent "goodnight" messages to 50,000 strangers over the past 12 years in exchange for a small fee.
According to SMCP, Jiumei, about 30 years old, sells goodnight text messaging services on an e-commerce platform.
About 10,000 people have bought messages from her for 1 yuan a night. Over the past 12 years, she has sent a total of 50,000 messages.
Expressions range from simple "good night" in Chinese to poems and "healing" comforting words.
Jiumei told media outlet Personage that her messages were a comfort to "modern people suffering from loneliness" and a window into the lives of others.
Many customers have purchased good night messages for their crushes or exes they miss.
Jiumei refuses to send messages from singles to married people to avoid causing trouble for the recipient and their family.
Jiumei says her messages, ranging from simple to poetic, bring comfort to lonely people.
A mother asked Jiumei to say goodnight to her 14-year-old daughter who suffered from anxiety and was addicted to her cell phone.
The young girl no longer trusted her parents, who found it difficult to understand her illness. The mother wanted to "comfort her lonely heart and remind her to go to bed early".
Another person bought Jiumei's service for her brother, a terminal cancer patient who had become increasingly estranged from his family. She hoped the goodnight messages would accompany him.
Another customer, a man in his 30s running a startup, bought the messages himself for emotional support.
Jiumei is married with two sons. The goodnight text service has been her part-time job for 12 years.
During that time, she also became the director of a company in Shenzhen city (Guangdong province), then opened a coffee shop.
She said her “goodnight text message” business had never been profitable, earning her a maximum of 3,000 yuan (over 10 million VND) a year. She considered giving up but changed her mind after former customers contacted her to thank her.
Jiumei said the service has also helped her a lot mentally. The ninth daughter in a Chaoshan family in Guangdong province, she said her parents devoted all their love to their younger brother, their only son.
She thinks her goodnight texts bring "a sense of ritual (needed in the evening)" as well as comfort.
She also accepts that people will stop buying her services because she hopes it means they won't feel alone anymore.
