The agreement, valid for five years from 2021 to 2026, was unanimously approved by the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) executive committee, representing approximately 160,000 actors and other media professionals.

AI has emerged as a major concern in the entertainment industry. Last year, the issue was central to negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and major studios, triggering a months-long strike by Hollywood actors. By November, the strike ended when the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee approved contracts that included measures to protect actors from AI.
The music industry is also facing a headache as the emergence of AI-generated technology allows internet users to easily create songs by imitating artists' voices without their consent.
Under the new agreement, record labels wishing to use a clone of an artist's voice to produce and release a song must obtain the artist's consent and will also have to compensate the artist.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, chief negotiator for SAG-AFTRA, said: "This agreement ensures that our members are protected. While technology can enhance the creative process, the essence of music must always stem from authentic human expression and experience."
