The study, led by scientists from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health (USA), included 47,513 participants, mostly women, who were followed for 30 years. The authors assessed caffeine intake using a food frequency questionnaire that included coffee and tea consumption. They then analyzed the impact of consuming these beverages on healthy aging.
Each additional cup of coffee consumed (up to 4 cups per day) increases the likelihood of healthy aging by 2 - 5%.

Healthy aging means living a long life - 70 years or older, free of 11 major chronic diseases; being in good physical and mental health, with no cognitive decline or memory problems.
The authors found that in middle age, between 45 and 60, participants consumed an average of 315 mg of caffeine per day - the equivalent of three cups of coffee.
Drinking coffee helps increase the ability to age healthily and clearly
The results found that drinking more than one cup of coffee a day - containing about 80 mg of caffeine - increased the chances of healthy and clear aging.
Specifically, from the second cup of coffee onwards, up to a maximum of 4 cups per day, each additional cup of coffee consumed increases the chance of healthy aging by 2 - 5%, according to the medical news site Medical Express.
Experts recommend consuming no more than 4 cups of coffee per day - 400 mg of caffeine.
However, findings show that decaffeinated tea or coffee do not have this effect.

Moderate coffee drinking may provide some protective benefits when combined with other activities such as regular exercise, healthy eating and avoiding smoking, said lead study author Dr Sara Mahdavi, a nutritionist at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.
This study adds to previous evidence that coffee drinking may be linked to healthy aging, Dr Mahdavi added.
The new study has several key strengths, Dr Mahdavi stressed, including its large size, 30-year follow-up, assessment of many different aspects of longevity and healthy aging, and very comprehensive information on nutritional and lifestyle habits collected every four years from the start of the study.
Coffee is rich in antioxidants, which can boost brain function. It has also been shown to increase alertness, aid weight control, improve mood, and potentially reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
