Conservation efforts will add to the biodiversity landscape, promote socio-economic development, and contribute to building a green and livable city.
Species diversity
Each plant species, each animal, each migratory bird, or each creature living deep in the ocean... not only together create a vibrant tapestry of biodiversity but also demonstrate that this development is the answer to an ideal living space, rich in potential for conservation and research.
For Nguyen Thanh Paven, founder of Viet Endangered Narratives (VEN), (34 years old, Da Nang), his passion for traveling through the forests of nature reserves in the city to make films helps him connect with nature and explore the ecosystem there. Thanks to this, his work "Da Nang - A Biodiversity City" won first prize in the "Happy Vietnam 2023" competition.
He said that after spending 10 years trekking through forests and crossing streams in many parts of the country, he returned and chose Da Nang as his filming location. This is because Da Nang possesses a rich ecosystem of flora and fauna, from the sea to the land. It can be said that this is an invaluable treasure of the city, allowing residents and tourists alike to experience its beauty.
Sharing the same view, photographer Huynh Van Truyen expressed that every moment spent wandering and photographing the flora and fauna in the conservation areas made him even more amazed by the ecosystem that the city possesses. Above all, he was happy to see that each time he visited the conservation areas, the species composition was thriving, especially the brown-footed langur and migratory birds that chose Son Tra Peninsula as their stopover point, such as the spotted-breasted sandpiper, the small curved-billed snipe, the red-breasted parrot, and the grey-headed parrot… According to him, this is a promising sign that in the future, Da Nang will be a common home for all species, and they will thrive in both quantity and quality.
Mr. Mai Van Duong, Head of the Nature Conservation Department of the City's Special Forest Management Board, said that every year, Son Tra Nature Reserve serves as a transit point for migratory birds. This reflects that the ecosystem here not only maintains high biodiversity but also contributes to protecting the local ecosystem. Currently, according to statistics, in the 7 nature reserves managed by the Special Forest Management Board, there are nearly 10,000 species of animals and plants, including endangered, endemic, and rare species listed in the 2007 Vietnam Red Book and the 2010 IUCN Red List. Many species have been confirmed to have increased numbers and new individuals have been discovered, such as the brown-footed langur, white-legged pheasant, jungle fowl, and jungle fowl…
Conservation and development
According to Mr. Le Hoang Son, Director of the City's Special Forest Management Board, the conservation and development of the flora and fauna ecosystem is identified by the management board as a key task, and they are implementing solutions for managing, protecting, and restoring the forest ecosystem.
Firstly, inspecting, patrolling, and protecting forests and maintaining biological corridors are essential to ensuring a stable habitat for wild animal and plant species.
Secondly, conserve endangered and rare species, prioritizing in-situ conservation for endemic and highly endangered species. Simultaneously, implement rescue, care, breeding, and reintroduction of wild animals, and conserve the genetic resources of rare plant species to maintain and develop their populations in the wild.
Thirdly, the application of science and technology in conservation, and digital databases in monitoring forest resources and biodiversity.
Fourth, mechanisms, policies, and conservation cooperation aimed at improving the effectiveness of natural resource management and conservation.
Fifth, control invasive alien species that pose a risk to ecosystems and native species.
Finally, the goal is to restore degraded forest ecosystems and restore habitats for endangered, rare, and precious species through natural regeneration, planting of native trees, and improving forest quality.
Simultaneously, over the past period, the city has proactively and actively implemented conservation work for plant and animal ecosystems and biodiversity, such as the Prime Minister's National Strategy on Biodiversity to 2030, vision to 2050, the National Biodiversity Conservation Plan for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050, and the program for the conservation of endangered, rare, and precious wild animal species to 2030, vision to 2050...
