(NLĐO) – Many fishermen in the largest coastal town in the Mekong Delta smiled broadly as their boats docked full of fish and shrimp.

On January 29th (the first day of the Lunar New Year), after a long fishing trip at sea, many fishermen in Song Doc town, Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province returned to shore with boats full of fish and shrimp. The successful first fishing trip of the year brought joy and happy smiles to the fishermen.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Thien (40 years old, residing in Song Doc town) said that he and many fishermen on his boat had gone out to sea to fish since the 19th day of the 12th lunar month. Before leaving, Mr. Thien bought meat, fish, vegetables, eggs, etc., to prepare food for him and his fellow fishermen to celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year) at sea.

"Fishermen are out at sea, but they also have all the traditional Tet dishes like braised pork, pickled mustard greens, braised meat, pickled shallots... to celebrate the spring. On the night of the 29th of Tet, we all pitched in to cook a feast to offer to our ancestors and prayed for calm seas so that the fishing would be successful. After deducting all expenses, I earned over 400 million dong from my first fishing trip of 2025," Mr. Thien said excitedly.

Speaking about his first experiences celebrating the Lunar New Year at sea, Mr. Nguyen Van Sang (36 years old; residing in Cai Nuoc district, Ca Mau province) said that when he first started the profession, not being able to reunite with family during Tet made everyone sad, but over time, they gradually got used to it.

As New Year's Eve approaches, the fishing boats will temporarily stop fishing and anchor. At this time, the lights of the fishing boats not only illuminate the sky, but the shouts and calls of the fishermen create a lively atmosphere on the sea; fishermen from different boats socialize with each other, creating a joyful atmosphere.

"After receiving over 12 million dong in wages from the boat owner, I took a bus back to my hometown and used some of it to buy new clothes for my son and some food for Tet (Lunar New Year). The rest I saved to cover living expenses. Although fishing is hard work, we understand that going out to sea to fish is not only for economic benefit but also contributes to protecting the sovereignty of the Fatherland, so everyone is proud of the work they are doing," Mr. Sang said.

Song Doc town is one of the three key urban centers of Ca Mau province, with 1,114 fishing vessels and approximately 9,000 fishermen. It is considered the largest coastal town in the Mekong Delta.

Speaking to reporters, most fishermen affirmed that they would strictly abide by the law in fishing and seafood harvesting to help the whole country remove the IUU yellow card.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Trieu, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Song Doc town, said that the locality not only possesses a large number of fishing vessels but also has a thriving post-harvest processing industry. Song Doc town identifies fishing and aquaculture as the focus of its marine economic development.

"The seafood catch in Song Doc in 2024 reached over 130,000 tons, a significant increase compared to the same period. Businesses and factories proactively invested in modern equipment for post-harvest processing, not only enhancing the value of many specialty products but also contributing to job creation and increased income for the people," emphasized the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Song Doc town.
