Fishermen in the coastal areas of Quang Tri have a good shrimp season.

Taking advantage of favorable weather, fishermen go out to sea early in the morning and return late in the afternoon. Some boats make 2-3 trips per day, collecting 400-500 kg of shrimp. After being harvested from the sea, the shrimp will be transported to shore to be sold fresh or dried. Depending on the size and freshness, right at the wharf, fresh shrimp are purchased by traders for 5-6 thousand VND/kg; dried shrimp is priced at about 60 thousand VND/kg. After deducting expenses, each boat earns 1-3 million VND/day.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, a fisherman in Thuy Ban village, Ben Hai commune, said: “Today alone, my family’s boat caught about 500 kg of shrimp, earning about 3 million VND. This year, the shrimp output is higher than last year, because in years with a lot of rain and storms, there is a lot of shrimp.”

According to the experience of fishermen, after each storm, shrimp often appear near the shore, moving in waves, creating a red stream that is easily recognizable. Hundreds of fishermen thanks to that experience have a significant seasonal income.

Mr. Tran Van Cuong, Head of the Economic Department of Ben Hai Commune, added: “For coastal areas, short-term crops like this bring a good income to local fishermen. On average, each shrimp crop, each boat can earn 150 million VND before deducting expenses. This year, in the coastal areas of Trung Giang Commune (old), now Ben Hai Commune, thanks to the good shrimp harvest, fishermen are very excited. In addition to creating conditions for fishermen to sell fresh products, the commune also focuses on finding new directions for fishermen's aquatic products by deep processing so that products brought to the market will have higher prices and quality in the coming time.”
