What should people with fatty liver eat during Tet?

VnExpressVnExpress03/02/2024

Eating enough protein, good fats, fiber, vitamins; limiting sugar, salt and starch are notes for people with fatty liver disease during Tet.

Fatty liver is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in liver cells. There are many different causes that cause an imbalance between fat production and consumption in the body. Mostly due to unscientific diet.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Anh Duy Tung, Nutrihome Nutrition Clinic System, said that during Tet, people with fatty liver should follow some of the nutritional principles below.

Eat enough protein : Protein has the ability to restore cells and prevent fat accumulation in the liver. Normally, 80% of the amino acids produced by the liver each day come from protein. These amino acids then participate in the process of breaking down fat in the liver.

Consuming enough protein every day can help prevent and improve fatty liver disease. People with this disease should consume 1.1 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.

Eat enough good fats : Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body produces insulin to regulate blood glucose (sugar) levels, but the cells do not accept the glucose. Excess glucose accumulates as fat in the liver, making fatty liver disease worse.

Eating unsaturated fats such as omega 3, omega 6... (found in eggs, avocados, nuts and vegetable oils) helps to overcome this condition. They have the effect of improving insulin resistance, helping to control the accumulation of glucose.

Eat more fiber : Fiber is a type of carbohydrate from vegetables, tubers, fruits, seeds and grains, which has non-absorbable properties. In the intestine, fiber absorbs water and forms a thin film that helps prolong the digestion process. The amount of fat absorbed into the body during this process is also controlled.

Fiber also helps control blood sugar and insulin, supporting the blood filtration process. Fiber plays an important role in the diet of people with fatty liver. The amount of fiber each person should eat daily is equivalent to 240g of fruit and 300g of green vegetables.

Supplementing vitamins and antioxidants : The liver function of people with fatty liver disease is impaired, affecting the synthesis of vitamins, causing nutrient deficiencies. Supplementing vitamins in the diet helps patients become healthier. Vitamins A, C, and E are powerful antioxidants that protect liver cells from damage caused by free radicals. The B vitamin group supports the process of converting food into energy, protecting liver function.

Low-salt, low-sugar diet: A low-salt, low-sugar diet reduces the risk of high blood sugar, cholesterol, and liver fat.

Eat less starch : White starch turns into sugar when entering the body. Eating a lot of starch leads to excess sugar in the blood, increasing the amount of fat accumulated in the liver. People with fatty liver need to limit the consumption of white starch and prioritize complex starch sources such as tubers, fruits, cereals...

Dr. Tung noted that during Tet, people with fatty liver should prioritize healthy foods such as garlic, fatty fish (sardines, salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, etc.), broccoli, green tea, walnuts, soybeans, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, sunflower seeds. Patients should not eat animal fat, fast food, fried foods, spicy foods, and should limit the use of red meat, candy, soft drinks, beer, and alcoholic beverages. Supplementing with natural essences S. Marianum and Wasabia helps control the activity of kupffer cells, contributing to protecting the liver and restoring fatty liver function.

Patients must comply with the doctor's treatment (if any), and can have a nutritional examination to receive advice on a scientific diet suitable for their condition.
